Default En-Suite Ephemera

Snapped this fella on my windowsill this morning, wondering if it may be a March Brown?

If so it would be interesting that we have these in our area

Comparing it to Daiwl Bach's photograph of the MB I think we can say yours is not (note speckled wing and large secondary wing).

Unfortunately my ability to recognise upwings more or less end with the word 'upwing' but I'd hazard a guess at an LDO, It has the turbinate eyes of the baetis.

There'll be an expert along in a minute to prove me wrong.

To be fair it did have more of a dark olive hue to it to the naked eye than the camera was able to capture.

Blimey,
I didn't expect an expert to concur with me! I considered Pond Olive and dismissed it because of the turbinate (cone shaped) eyes.

I have Malcolm Greenhalgh and Denys Ovenden's book "The Complete Fly Fisher's Handbook" to thank for reference.

It looks like a Large Dark Olive (baetis rhodani) when you compare it to the LDO in the photo below.

LDO for me. Firstly because it's by far the most common at this time of year - and it's not a March Brown! The pond olive tends to hatch later in the year.

LDO it is then!

We're a mile from the Ribble here so it's a way from home or maybe it hatched out of the stream in SharkeyP's street.
