Default ID dumbell

I am a real dumbell when it comes to fly ID. A sporadic hatch on the River Teme today. Not tiny, about 10mm and a nice mouthful with wings that looked like a mottled partridge feather. Should have brought one home with me. Would it be a March Brown? Have we got the MB on Teme? AND are there any entomology short courses available, Worcs, Shrops way because I really need some improvement in this direction? Alan.

Are you sure it was an ephemera? A bit more info would be of great help: tails, number, length, body colour etc. ?

Regards,
Johan

As LHomme asks sure it was an olive? Could it be a grannom or similar?

No expert on entomology but the grannom have started showing down here recently.

10mm is certainly not a March Brown.

March Brown:

It's the right size for a Grannom, but they usually hatch in large numbers:

Grannom have a distinctive swirling up and down the river flight - they travel a long way up and down - when a hatch is on it's an amazing effect.

You should get a book - Goddards Waterside Guide, published by Coch-y-Bonddu books is a great place to start: JOHN GODDARD'S WATERSIDE GUIDE: AN ANGLER'S POCKET REFERENCE TO THE INSECTS OF RIVERS AND LAKES... Goddard (John). 0002184176 | All Fishing Books | Coch-y-Bonddu Books

Hope that helps. And keep an eye on this section of the forum - some proper anoraks on here...
