Default Internal Parasite ?

Hi Guys

Caught a wild Brown trout today when i gutted it i was rather shocked to find what looked like cyst's along the out side of the stomach containing what looked like coiled up worms !!

Anyone tell me what they are ?

And is the fish still edible ?

My advice would be to send the photo and details of where it came from to your local EA Fisheries Dept. They will have a look and tell you. The photo seems "fresh" which is important in the diagnosis.

I have seen this a few times. It seems to affect a lot of the fish in some waters for a while (say a year or so) before disappearing again. I believe that in some of the Caithness lochs (including Watten?) trout were full of these worms for a while some years ago but you never hear anything about it these days.
I can't recall what the parasite is and like Bruce I can't find it online ATM.
The fish is safe to eat as long as you cook it

Looks superficially similar to a parasite I had a problem with in one of my aquaria last year;

The body cavity was full of cysts, too.

Stirling University aquaculture department help out my local club with any problems they have with fish. They might be worth a try.

Extensive googling has turned up this from across the pond.

DNR - Red Worm

This is the closest I have been able to find to the worm cysts I've seen in the past.

I'm fairly certain it's Hydatid.
