Default Statistical analysis of kick sample results..

Hello all

well it is official, cabin fever has the better of me .. when you start writing about statistics on a fishing blog you need to get out more

ok so i got to thinking about kick sampling whilst writing some lecture material and realised i had never seen anybody talk about data analysis in here..

so i decided to have a go...

Entomology « flyangler.co.uk

unfortunately you only get one dynamic page on wordpress so it will just be a case of adding to a long page and trying to get it in a logical order as it grows

Please have a read and let me know if you follow it... sometimes being "in the game" makes you blind to many things...

thanks

Icky that is a good read, I will mark it as one to follow. I haven't given a thought to population ecology since my university days...

Crikey! that is some 'in-depth' blog entry

Makes great reading...especially for those who have(are) undertaking kick sampling surveys, well done.

Mick.

That is a mammoth task you have set yourself

I don't know or use Wordpress but I came across this and wondered if you would be able to set up pages to the different species and link to them in the blog or pull them into the page from a database.

Pages « WordPress Codex

This is an article on using a database in Wordpress.

WordPress Plugins and Database Interaction | Devlounge

Then when you update the database or add a new page you would only need a link in the main blog page.

Good article - now, let's see you write a layman's introduction to hypothesis testing in 1000 words

Very interesting, Martin. Always good to read about a more scientific approach once and a while. Been doing this a couple of years now with kids and a very simplified formula to arrive at a water quality index. Quite a different approach when you consider gammarus pulex and asellus aquaticus for instance aren't even included in the calculation. The emphasis is more on the pollution sensitive species like plecoptera, ephemeroptera and thrichoptera. Your analysis being on biodiversity, did you limit the species to six or were those all you found?

regards,
Johan

The data isn't real, it is just a worked example to demonstrate how to apply the formula..

Now I get it! Was puzzled by the amounts of shrimp. Anyway, your formula works. Bookmarked this, thanks.

Johan the whole point of this approach is that you are measuring both diversity and abundance of species, as you quite rightly say there are certain species (such as the plecoptera) that are very sensitive indicators, well as i am sure you can see as soon as there is a deviation in numbers the index score would drop...

i would also like to comment on the quantity of gammarus... if you get the chance do some sampling on a chalkstream... you will be surprised how many you get...

Thanks for putting the work in IP, it looks good. Different to the way I use sampling data where falls in abundance and diversity trigger alerts.

I haven't applied that formula to any results our group's data yet but I wonder, would the index drop by the same amount regardless of whether it was an equal decrease in a low scoring invertebrates such as chironimids or high scorers such as BWOs?
