Entomology for Anglers

Following on from the unique and successful Entomology for Anglers courses with
Andrew Dixon and Stuart Crofts in collaboration with the FBA (Freshwater Biological
Association) during 2008, 2009 and 2010, it has been announced that there are three more
courses planned for 2011. The dates and locations are:

Saturday 9th April 2011, the Scottish Centre for Ecology and the Natural Environment
at Loch Lomond.

Saturday 21st May 2011 at the FBA River Laboratory in Dorset (East Stoke)

Saturday 28th May 2011 at the FBA in Cumbria (Windermere)

These are “one day workshops” on the river invertebrates & terrestrials insects that
are the food source of trout & grayling. They are specifically aimed at fly anglers. The
courses cover life cycles and basic identification with field collection of the larvae and
adult files. These natural flies are then linked to artificial flies which we use to catch the
fish. The cost of each course should be around £50 per person.

For further details and information on how to book for courses please contact:

Melanie Fletcher at the FBA via email at: events@fba.org.uk

The FBA website is at; Home - Freshwater Biological Association

They sold out very quickly last year, so dont dither!

Thumbs up

Thanks Pom. I found quite a few other courses listed: http://www.fba.org.uk/c/document_lib...&groupId=10740

Tempted to put my name down for this one, nothing to do with Entomology, except that some invertebrates are secondary hosts to some nasty examples, that could be identified in 'kick samples'. I'll enquire further first.

'Fish health, parasites and disease

Date: Tuesday 29th March

Tutor: Roger Sweeting

Cost: £120; early bird rate £105; FBA member £95

Location: FBA Windermere, Cumbria

This is an introductory course for people
wanting to understand more about the
parasites and diseases of freshwater
fish. It will include general principles of
parasitology, fish physiology and some
practical dissection and microscope work.

Roger Sweeting has spent many years
studying fish health and has a particular
interest in fish parasitology.

Can you kick sample a Barbel on it?

I am going to book the Windermere. i booked last year but they screwed up my booking ( teething prob's). So It was sold out by the time I realised. And after promoting these things didn't get to do any of them.

Never been inside the FBA at Sawrey, it's like sacred ground for me. Would love to get in that library.
