Default Feedback please

I want to get more into the entomology side of things so I did some searching and found this book http://www.nhbs.com/mayfly_larvae_ep...no_176522.html. Anyone on here have it or read it. It looks good, if its worth getting I might treat myself to an early christmas present.

Hello Bill,

I haven't read that specific booklet, but the FBA materials are very good.
If you are just starting out, a word with Stuart Crofts at Torrentis would be a recommended place to start:
torrentis

Think of it as the equivalent of a casting lesson - save a lot of time and money in the long run.

A search of Ians posts (Sedgeking) on this forum will also help a great deal.
I owe him a great deal for his help, well, a bottle of good red at least

I've got that publcation Bill but it's a rather technical number and a little intimidating as it concentrates on microscopic detail rather than easily understood characteristics for beginners.

It also confines you to larvae and although they're easy to gather as they're in the water rather than the air it's nice to have an all in one guide that deals with adults too.

The recently published Guide to Ephemeroptera by Cyril Bennett and Craig Macadam is the one for you and it's considerably cheaper than the FWBA book, it's a Field Studies Council publication and a very reasonable price: £15 per copy plus p&p

To order a copy telephone FSC publications on 01743 852140 or visit FSC (Field Studies Council) - Bringing Environmental Understanding to All

With the money you've saved get one of the FSC guides to stonefly and caddis and you'll be well on your way to getting to grips with identifying aquatic inverts.

Hi diawl back. You say you have that book. How good is the photography in it. I'm very keen to have a better understanding of these nymphs but I also want clear, good quality photos of them which are hard to come by on the internet. I enjoy tying semi-realistic flies for myself not for fishing and have yet to find a book which provides me with detailed images of these nymphs.

Regards

Bill.

Sorry about the delayed answer, I've been away from the computer.

The FWBA book has more line drawing than photography whereas Macadam and Bennet have plenty of good photos of the nymphs - at least in the pre release book I had, the real deal should be better of course and I'll be buying another copy. Studying a few kick samples is a great way to see what you should be aiming for at the vice and with the book to help you identify the specimens it will definitely enrich your experience.
