Read weekly 2012 Scaling Dam fishing reports here.

Scaling Dam Fishing Season: March 10 to November 30 (Rainbows). March 22 to September 30 (Brown Trout). Size: 105 acres (42h), Max Depth 30 feet (9m). Grid Ref: NZ746 127 (For Internet Satellite Viewing)

Scaling is a very popular fishery serving Teesside and North Yorkshire. It is relatively small at 42 hectares (105 acres) and is shallow with a maximum depth of nine metres (30ft). This makes the fishing relatively easy, making Scaling an ideal place for beginners.

Weekly Ranger’s review:

Fishery Headline: Sun triggers good start.

A chilly breeze greeted the anglers on the first morning and it was slow going to begin with, this all changed once the sun shone and it turned out to be a fine start to the season.

Fly anglers have had a decent time however those bait fishing had more success.

For the bait anglers feeders filled with maggots and ground bait attracted the fish but the old faithful worm and Powerbait combination was the top method.

For the fly angler an assortment of lures fishing on medium sunk lines was the most consistent method.

Best flies:
Gold head Lures in black and green, orange and white.

Best baits:
Worm and Orange Powerbait eggs

Best areas:

West End of Dam Wall

Default Scaling Dam Northumbrian Water Report 21st March 2010

Weekly Ranger’s review: Luke’s all White

This week can only be described as excellent! From a reasonable start things rapidly improved and by the middle of the week both bait and fly anglers had accounted for 16 fish over 3lbs in weight.

Star angler this week was 11 year old Luke Swales from Guisborough While his looked looked on Luke caught 6 trout with the heaviest weighing in at 5lb 1oz using pure White Powerbait.

Regular angler Richard Wishart from Middlesbrough caught a fine 6lb 8oz trout using worm and polyball from the disabled jetty. The best trout of the week weighed in at 6lb 9oz and was caught from the West end of the Dam Wall using Orange Powerbait by Mr. T. Sargeant also from Middlesbrough.

Fly anglers were equally busy in the latter half of the week with Dawson’s Olive once again proving its worth. Best tactic has been to only use a slow retrieve and a short cast as the fish were feeding quite close to the margins.

Best flies:
Dawson’s Olive and Montana.

Best baits:
Worm and polyball, Maggot and Powerbait eggs.

Best areas:
West End, North and South Shores.

Weekly Ranger’s review:

Fishery Headline: Young teaching the Old!

Another very good week for both bait and fly anglers with a number of larger fish also featuring in the catch returns. Once again it’s been the younger generation showing how it should be done with five youngsters recording the best catches of the week. 11 year old Elliot Sullivan from Nunthorpe was over the moon when he caught his biggest fish to date at 3lb5oz then going on to reach his 8 fish limit in 3 hours. His granddad then bought a second permit and Elliot went on to catch another 7 including a superb 9lb 2oz rainbow! For Elliot it was definitely a day to remember.

With no particular hotspot the fish have been equally spread around the reservoir. Fly anglers have had a busy time and several have returned fish into double figures, regulars Mr Les Wheatley and Mr. Tommy Johns returned 33 between them in one session this week.

Best flies:
Invicta, Dawsons Olive, Orange Snatcher
Best baits:
Powerbait eggs, worm, maggots

Weekly Ranger’s review:

Fishery Headline: Clarke does the Dawson’s Dance

Mr Clarke Mondal from Middlesbrough was kept on his toes whilst fly fishing at the Big Tree on the south shore using a variation on the reliable Dawson’s Olive. It was a Dawson’s Dancer that got the fish into the groove as he managed to net 9 rainbows in great session.

It was not only the fly anglers who enjoyed some great sport from this area bait rods using Maggot or Magic Dust in the feeder with worm and Powerbait were also amongst the fish.

Cold snaps for a few days slowed the pace somewhat and made the going more difficult, mornings were reasonably steady and as the day warmed up the fish became more active during the mid to late afternoon hours.
The warmer weather also brought the fish to the surface at times, spinners were also quite successful from the Dam wall.

Best flies:
Dawsons Dancer, Red and Black Buzzers, Invicta, Bibio.
Best baits:
Chartruese and Orange Powerbait, Worm with polyball, Maggot and Magic dust.
Best areas:
For bait- Both ends of Dam Wall, Big Tree.
For Fly- The timber groyne, Big Tree, West half of the south shore.

Weekly Ranger’s review:

Fishery Headline: Five in a day the Scaling way

A slow start to the week suddenly exploded into an amazing action packed period of sport. Once again many good catches have been recorded from all around the reservoir.
A variety of baits and flies have attracted the fish this week and in total there have been 24 fish weighing in above 3lbs, 14 of those were in the 5lb bracket and above.
Four regular rods from Saltburn and a visiting friend from South Wales had a day to remember with non stop action on the rocks at the east end of the reservoir. The anglers used both bait and fly techniques and ended the day with a total of 35 fish between them 6 of those were all between 5lb and 5lb 7oz.
The fun didn’t stop there;
On the Disabled Jetty another 5 fish around the 5lb plus mark were also caught, three of which were taken by 81 year old Mr K Hall from Normanby on his first 3 casts!
Mr W Miller from Loftus had the largest of this group a fine rainbow weighing in at 6lbs. Young angler Keiran Morgan from Skelton on his first trip caught a fine 5lb 12oz fish on a worm and pink Powerbait egg cocktail.
However the star of the show was Mr F Orban from Runswick on his first fishing trip this year and with the first cast he reeled in a fantastic looking 8lb 2oz rainbow using orange Powerbait eggs and a rubber maggot.

Dawsons Olive,Black Fritz, Kate McLaren, Invicta, Bibio

Weekly Ranger’s review:

Fishery Headline: In a spin

Although at times the weather has been cold and blustery this week the action has continued at a steady pace with the shoals of trout now widely spread around the reservoir.

Spinning has been particularly effective this week as Mr C Harris and his father from Loftus found out when using a new shiny silver spinner. The pair went on to catch an 8 fish limit each including a fine quality 7lb’er.

The conditions may have slightly favoured the bait anglers however they did not have all the fun as the biggest two fish of the week weighing in at 8lb2oz were caught by Mr Eddie Welford from Guisborough and Mr T Shaw from Loftus on fly.

Best flies:
Dawsons Olive, Cats Whisker, Balck and Olive buzzers

Best baits:
Spinners, worm, powerbait

Weekly Ranger’s review:

Fishery Headline: A change is as good as a rest

Mr T Iceton from Redcar decided not to fish his usual spot at the east end of the dam wall and headed to the west end for a change. Fishing with orange Powerbait eggs on a ledger rig he was rewarded with the largest of the week at 6lb 4oz.

Throughout this week heavy fog and drizzle tried put a dampener on things however it did not deter the fish from feeding as on some days the rod average rose to a staggering 7.5. In particular the morning till noon session has been the most productive time when the fish have been hard on the feed.

It has been a better week for the fly anglers as the fish are feeding on or just under the surface, a variety of wet patterns has tempted plenty of fish.
For both the bait and fly anglers the fish have been fairly close in so casting short distances has paid dividends this week. There has been no particular hot spot as once again the shoals of fish have been evenly spread across the reservoir.

Once again this week those anglers choosing to use spinners have had a lot of response recording some great catches to this method.

Best flies:

Kate McLaren, Invicta, Damsel nymph, sunk Daddy.

Best baits:

Worm, orange or chartreuse Powerbait eggs. various spinners.

Best Areas:

All areas fishing well
