It has been a spectacular week for anglers as the fish responded to more favourable conditions. Fishery Headline: Steady start

Early season anglers were greeted by fine bright cool conditions for much of the opening period. Sport started off on the slow side with anglers working hard to record 125 fish for the opening weekend. As the week progressed and the strong spring sunshine began to warm the water the fish started to feed much better. Bait rods are having their best success using ledger tactics at range in the deeper water with PowerBait and worm cocktails producing the best takes.

This weekend sport improved dramatically with all methods accounting for some good catches. On Saturday within 2 hours Fly angler Paul Harland from Darlington caught 14 fish safely returning 6 whilst Clarke Mondal from Middlesbrough managed a total of 17 fish to the fly safely returning 9. Both anglers had a great day and caught all their fish on Dawson’s Olive using a fast retrieve. A good number of fish around the 3lb to 4lb mark have been recorded with the best weighing in at 4lb 8oz caught on worm from the east end by Gerald Dale from Stokesly.

Fishery Headline: Young anglers lead the way

A fine week of weather brought along with it some great family entertainment and it was the children who had the most fun and who caught the most fish!

4 year old Kaitlyn Robinson fishing with her brother Jacob aged 5 caught 7 fish in total while their proud dad was happy to supervise and man the landing net. The family fished the west end of the dam wall and caught all their fish using White Gulp Eggs. A delighted Kaitlyn said she caught the most as she was using her special pink rod.

White Gulp eggs have been very successful this week accounting for some fine catches when fished with a worm. The fish are well spread around the reservoir and have often been close to the margins feeding on an abundance of early season fly hatches.

There have been some fine catches in the 3lb to 5lb range but the best of the week was tempted by a worm and Chartreuse PowerBait cocktail bait. This fine fish weighed in at 8lb 4oz and was caught on the south shore by Mr Andrew Cotter from Nunthorpe.

Best flies:

Dawson’s Olive, Viva, Kate McLaren

Best bait:

Worm, White Gulp Eggs, Dark Green and Chartreuse PowerBait

Fishery Headline: Lightning strikes twice for Sarah

Sarah Parkin from Whitby had a fantastic day on Friday fishing from her favourite spot on the south shore. Sarah fishing on a family permit netted 9 fish and could not believe her eyes when she reeled in the biggest fish of the week at 6lb 9oz.This super fish also happened to be a uniquely marked golden trout netting her a cool £200 sweep prize. This is the first gold caught this season and is a repeat of last season when Sarah caught the first golden trout in exactly the same place! Sarah caught most of her fish using a worm and PowerBait cocktail and landed her special fish on Chartreuse PowerBait Eggs. ( picture supplied)

Mark Hammond from Redcar had an active day at the east end of the dam wall when he caught his 8 fish limit including a 3lb rainbow. Mark caught all his fish using White Gulp Eggs which is currently one of the most successful baits at present.

12 year old Mitchell Hillyard from Loftus fishing with his uncle on the south shore could not hide his excitement after catching his very first fish on his first visit to Scaling. Mitchell caught his fish using worm on a ledger rig.
