Fishery Headline: Anglers record fine average

It has been another excellent week on Hury with fish continuing to rise freely and many being caught on dries. The unseasonable warm temperatures have meant that the natural fly life has been more active than expected for this time of year. Trout have been taken on floating line tactics with Buzzer, Sedge and Hopper patterns being particularly effective.
Lure anglers have also taken their fair share with fry imitating patterns giving the best results fished high in the water on floating or intermediates lines with a slow figure of eight retrieve.
The north shore has again been fishing very well especially between the White Post and Reedy Point.

Fishery Headline: Fighting fit

Anglers have enjoyed another week of steady sport as the trout continue to feed in the mild autumn weather. The short and sporadic hatches of Black Buzzer are still occurring on the mildest days and anglers must react quickly to make the most of this. The hotspots for Buzzer activity are the muddy shallows near Reedy Point and the Peninsula on the south shore. Anglers fishing lures along the margins have also had some great sport catching some very fit rainbows and blues that can be found close to shore the as they hunt for roach fry and any late season wind blown terrestrials.
This week we will be stocking some more of our own Lartington fish that should ensure good sport continues to the end of the season.

Seasonal rod average 3.6

Fishery Headline: Five star catches

Although lightly fished this week Hury continues to be in outstanding form with an excellent rod average for the week of nearly 5 per angler.
The continued mild weather has encouraged the fish to feed hard with the hatches of small Buzzers offering them a final chance of a good meal before the onset winter.
Fish have been seen rising on most days and small traditional wets; such as Zulu and Kate McLaren fished slowly on floating lines have produced some hard and vicious takes.
Gold head lures are still taking fish as long as they are not fished to quickly.
At present the fish are feeding within yards of the bank so wading is not necessary and anglers who have concentrated on presentation have faired the best.

Fishery Headline: Excellent end to the season

Hury finished the season in fine style as water temperatures remained reasonably high for the time of year which encouraged the trout feed hard. Most anglers caught using tried and trusted lures however; the best catches were recorded by those using traditional wets fished about a foot down with a slow figure of eight retrieve. Derek Carr and Malcolm Gowland both caught limits on the last weekend, while Mr. and Mrs Ramshaw had a cracking catch of seven rainbows for 18lb 12oz. Their fine catch included the heaviest fish of the week at 4lb 12oz.

New season casts off Saturday 10 March 2012

Fishery Headline: Fish switch onto Buzzer hatch

It has been a superb start to the 2012 season on our fly only water with 42 anglers recording 8 fish limit catches including some fin perfect overwintered specimen trout. The fish have been feeding hard on a very early and large hatch of Black Buzzer. A small Bibio has been very effective for these fish but the bulk of catches have fallen to lures with the Devastator being extremely productive. An intermediate line and a very slow retrieves has been the best approach.

The Top end boil pipe and Newhouse Bay have been fishing quite well but the real hot spots have been around the White Post on the north shore and Corporal Hill on the south shore.

Cats Whisker, Devastator, Bibio, Orange Blob

Fishery Headline: Top sport top average

The early spring warmth and longer daylight hours has encouraged insect life to wake from its winter slumber and regular buzzer hatches are bringing fish to the surface on the calmer days as the pupa become trapped in the surface film providing easy pickings. Anglers have had some extraordinary sport on the calm light ripple days taking fish on dry fly and small spider patterns. On the breezier days sport has been just as good with anglers returning to more seasonal methods of a lure on the point and Palmered wets on the dropper to continue taking fine catches. The mornings are still cool so until the sun warms the top layers an intermediate line with lures is recommended. William Harvey landed the biggest fish to date a cracking 5lb silvery Lartington rainbow. The first of the March browns should be seen soon and if they hatch in good numbers then patterns to imitate the nymph or the adult will give exiting sport.

Fishery Headline: Fly fishing at its best

21 limit catches signals another brilliant week which has seen the catch rate stay above 5 fish per angler. The fish are well spread and excellent catches have been taken from both the north and south shores. As we enter April the next two months should see this reservoir at its best and anglers can expect some fine sport to buzzers nymphs and dries. Floating and intermediate lines are the order the day at present set up with of a lure on the point and two small traditional flies on the droppers spaced around 5 feet apart.

Regulars Mr & Mrs Ramshaw had a cracking weekend on Saturday returning 6 fish and recording a limit catch for 19lb. This fine catch included the best of the week at 4lb and a two at 3lb. The couple returned to the reservoir on Sunday and enjoyed another fantastic session catching 10 fish which were all sportingly returned to the water.

Over the Easter period we have boosted our stocks and anglers will have the chance to land some heavyweight rainbows up to 10lb.

Fishery Headline: South Shields anglers enjoy super sport

Despite the wintry interlude Hury remained in fine form giving fly anglers some fantastic sport on a variety of methods.
South Shields anglers Gav Burn and Carlton Train had a very good day during the week both taking limit catches and returning several more from the North shore. The pair found a combination of a Black Nomad on the point with small Cormorant style pattern on the droppers to be the best approach. Gav Burn recorded the heaviest catch of the week with 8 fish for 20lb including a very nice 4lb 8oz rainbow.
Nymphs and dries are beginning to work well at the time of writing with good numbers of fish showing on the surface especially around Corporal Hill with small Suspender Buzzers working well for these rising fish.

Fishery Headline: Get straight to the point.

Anglers enjoyed some excellent fishing at Hury this week. Large numbers of fish were congregated around the Reedy Point on the north shore and the point of Corporal Hill on the south shore; these were feeding well providing anglers with plenty of action.

Over the last week fishing intermediate lines has given the most consistent results. Despite the cooler winds resulting in less fly life than during the recent mild spell, the fish have remained high in the water and willing to take. Traditional wet flies as well as the trusty lures such as Dawson’s Olive and Cats Whiskers worked equally well.

Mickleton angler Craig Owen made good use of his loyalty day weighing in a very nice limit catch. Craig chose to fish the more sheltered water in the lee of the wind near Reedy Point and took all of his fish on very small black wets fished almost static on a floating line.

It has been another good week for the fly angler at Hury with some fine fish coming to the scales. Many anglers have been put off by the bad weather forecasts but apart from the occasional shower it’s not been a bad week really.

Reedy point has again been very good with the fish responding well to dry fly tactics as quite a few terrestrials are beginning to show, even a few small daddies were reported on Tuesday.

Those who persisted with lures also did well with the ever reliable Dawson’s Olive accounting for several limit catches although a Cats Whisker and Orange Fritz also took their fair share.

M. Fraser took the heaviest limit catch this week with 8 fish weighing in at 20lb.
