Fishery Headline: COW GREEN ANGLERS IN HIBERNATION

With a fresh covering of snow on the ground anglers have remained in hibernation in front of a warm fire preparing there tackle for the thaw when they can bring those hard fighting wild fish to the net.

Fishery Headline: Slow thaw triggers first visits

The wild brown trout waters have had a slow start to the season due to winter conditions prevailing up in the Pennine hills. A slow thaw and gradual improvement in the conditions has seen two hardy anglers get the season off to a fair start. With the weather set to improve we will see more anglers venturing onto the upland waters in the coming weeks.

Fishery Headline: Anglers still in hibernation

Once the weather warms up we are expecting some good sport in the coming weeks when the native browns make up for lost time. Over the last week we have seen a return to winter conditions on the upland waters therefore most anglers have opted to fish the lower laying waters.

Fishery Headline: Spring at last?

The weather conditions on our upland waters have remained on the cool side for the opening period. We still have some patches of snow present and ice in margins on some mornings. Sport should start picking up now after a warmer week which has seen an increase in the amount natural insects hatching.

The number of anglers fishing Cow Green is finally starting to increase so an increase in the numbers of landed fish can be expected. Anglers should travel light and be prepared to stay on the move.

Worm

Fishery Headline: Still on the slow side

Sport has still been a little slow at Cow Green as the water takes a bit longer to warm up in this large upland Reservoir but anglers have had success using slow sinking lines and small black tadpoles or ledgering worms.

Fishery Headline: Feeding frenzy at Cow Green

It has been a superb week at Cow Geen with visiting anglers enjoying the best sport of the season so far.
The wild Browns have been in a feeding frenzy as they gorge on the large amounts of insect life around the margins.
Many anglers caught into double figures of fish with those prepared to travel light and walk to the top end and West Shore faring the best.
Floating lines and dries have taken the vast majority of fish with small palmered wets working well on the windier days.

Best flies:
Foam Beetle, Black Hopper, Claret Bumble

Best baits:
Float Fished Worm.

Best areas:
West Shore, Burn Mouths.

I fished Cow Green yesterday evening for an hour and a half in perfect tranquillity with only the skylarks, curlews and sheep for company. A few small brownies splashed at my dry fly with two small, spirited fish managing to get hooked otherwise all was calm. I saw just the very occasional rise but did not roam far from the hut. The reservoir is as low as I have ever seen it and has exposed some very interesting rock features. It is a magical place and I regret not being there during a ‘rise’ but I’ll be back.


June evening at Cow Green

It fished very well yesterday all the way down the West Shore very little rising to begin with but wind dropped off around 2.00pm and fish moving all over, small bibios and black dries all that was required!

Fishery Headline: A matter of time

The Browns have remained very near the surface all week and even in the bright sun anglers were taking many fish on floating lines and dry hoppers.
Some bigger fish estimated in the 2-3lb range have also been reported seen rising for Daddies and Sedges in the evenings. So far this season none of these specimen fish have been landed. However it should only be a matter of time as it was around this time last year they began to taken in good numbers.

Black Hoppers, Bibio, Zulu, Dry Daddy.

Best baits:
Float fished maggot.

Best areas:
Bays and stream inlets.
