Fishery Headline: Best sport of season to date

Cow Green anglers have enjoyed the best week of the season so far with a staggering rod average of just over nine recorded by 11 visitors this week.
This is largely due to the continued presence of the cumbersome Heather flies which has had the wild browns feeding avidly around he margins.

Stanhope angler Paul Tweddle had a fantastic day at the beginning of the week returning over forty trout in an action packed day, Paul travelled light and took fish from almost everywhere he stopped on a combination of small wets and dries.

Fishery Headline: Late heather fly provides feast for eager trout

Just when it looked like the Heather fly was all but finished for another year the mild week brought these tasty morsels back out in their droves and some of the best fishing of the season was experienced by visiting anglers.
Morning sport has been patchy but from around lunchtime onwards on most days the reservoir has come alive. Many anglers report catching around twenty fish in a session as they feed avidly from the surface. Some very nice fish have been taken too, with several over the 1lb mark reported and all in excellent condition.

Fishery Headline: Fortune favours the brave

Not surprisingly this remote upland water has been lightly fished this week due to the windy conditions. Those anglers who did venture out found the fish high up in the waves and keen to chase bushy wet flies such as a Clan Chief and Loch Ordie.
For the fourth week in a row fish weighing over 1lb were caught and as we enter the last weeks of the wild brown trout season we expect plenty more specimen wild fish to come to the net. In the next couple of weeks there is always the chance of something even bigger being recorded.

Zulu, Clan Chief, Loch Ordie

Best baits:

Float fished worm

Default Re: Cow Green Reservoir

First ever fishing trip to Cow Green on Saturday 31/03/2012, more of a reconnaissance trip for latter in the year having picked out a few spots using Google Earth and info at hand. I didn't get as far as I intended ( inflow of Tees) but got to fish some of the main bays and steam inlets.
With the breeze a north easterly (10 -13mph) it stayed at my back and the contours of the land provided a lee to comfortably cast out from into the ripple.
With no obvious sign of fish activity, apart from one fish near the fishing lodge which made its presence known with a few acrobatic leaps I opted for a floating line with intermediate head, fishing a bibo on the the dropper and various spider patterns on point.
The trout proved as fast as their reputation and although I managed to get three or four good takes, all on the drop I am ashamed to say I didn't convert.
My excuse, lulled by the beauty of the surroundings, not to mention the peace and quiet.
I fully intend to be back and would welcome any advice.
Great day out and my first real foray into wild trout fishing has totally converted me.....I will be studying the weather forecast!

Default Re: Cow Green Reservoir

I have fished Cow -Green since the 70s and have to say its one of my favourite reservoirs in Teesdale.
I first fished with thw worm.
Now i usually only carry the fly rod and wear walking boots and a rucksack with sandwiches and a drink.
I park up the public car park on the north shore and walk up the hard road towards the River Tees.
When i come to a small feeder that crosses under the road i cross over the moor and follow the stream down to a large bay where i start my fishing.
I usually always fish a team of three which is a bibio ,kate mclaren and on the point i like a teal and black.
I usually head up towards the Tees and somedays if i can hop over the Tees i will fish the South Shore also.
Best thing to do is fish the Reservoir like a river and its very rare that you need a long cast because most fish are right in the side.
I have had thirty fish some days and then others have blanked.
Their is plenty of fish in these reservoirs and i always remember being told by the baliff to take a few for the pot because they needed culling because they have to fight for food.
A 10 inch fish is a good fish from these wild reservoirs and when in prime condition make a lovely meal.
I have always said why travel to Scotland when we have Selset,Balderhead,Cow-Green here in the North East. Pity we cant have Blackton back as a wild trout water that reservoir holds a lot of memories for me.We need more people to use these reservoirs or we will lose them.
