Fishery Headline: Tiger taken on a Daddy

Derwent continues to provide some fantastic sport for both fly and bait anglers with the rod average remaining above 3 fish throughout the week. Bait rods are still enjoying success using a ledger rig combined with PowerBait Paste and a swim feeder filled with Magic Dust. Pow Hill and the second fence continue to produce outstanding returns with catch averages in these areas reaching 4-5 fish per angler on some days.
Fly hot spots remain similar to recent weeks intermediate lines combined with lures are producing the most consistent sport. On Saturday Michael Findlay from Haltwhistle caught a fine tiger to claim the sweep on a gold headed daddy from the Meadow. This is the second tiger to be landed in the last two weeks and with more to be caught and several £400 jackpots available expectations remain high. A. Coates from Consett landed the best fish of the week at 4lb 8oz on Green PowerBait paste and a ledger rig whilst J. Spoor took the best limit catch of the week at 17lb 2oz on fly that included a 3lb 6oz fish.

Fishery Headline: Cat takes the cream

The so far milder than expected conditions have seen water temperatures hold up which in turn is giving anglers some excellent late season sport. The rod average during October is the highest we have ever recorded at this time of the year. Paul Dunn using an intermediate line above the sailing club netted some superb fish this week using a Cat’s Whisker, on Sunday Paul had his best day of the week enjoying some fine sport catching 19 fish keeping 8 for 19lb. Fly anglers are recommended to stick to the basic tactic of intermediate line and lures with a Cat’s Whisker being the number one choice. All areas are producing good sport but if the wind is light the bank west of the sailing club has been exceptional. If the wind is strong Hunter House offers both protection and great sport from the south bank.
Multi bait anglers found conditions ideal with fish well spread from the dam wall up to Hunter House. This has resulted in almost all anglers leaving the banks with a good catch of fine conditioned feisty trout providing some consistent and exciting sport.
Double money sweep at Derwent
From Saturday 29 October anglers who enter our tiger trout sweep can expect to net a £800 jackpot.
There are currently several unique tagged tiger trout in the reservoir and they can be caught on a variety of methods.
Top tiger catching tips include a Mepps spinners, small traditional wet flies on an intermediate line and ledgered worm.
You have to be in it to win it good luck if you enter!
Terms and conditions apply rangers decision is final.

The mild autumn has contributed to some exciting late season sport as catches continue to be excellent with the rod average reaching five fish per angler on some days. This week eight anglers recorded our special catch limit of 10 ten fish each which will apply until the end of the month. Some of the larger trout are also still feeding well with a lot of 3-5lb fish taken recently with Robert Watson taking two top quality rainbows weighting in at 5lb 8oz each.

Fishery Headline: Record returns for the opening week

Visiting anglers have enjoyed some fanatic sport as the mild winter and higher than normal water temperatures combined to give ideal fishing conditions. This combination has resulted in some of the best sport for over a decade for the opening period with over 700 angler visits catching 3,901 fish. The preseason stock fish have dispersed well and all areas of the reservoir are producing some fine sport.

Fly anglers fishing the bank west of the Sailing club have enjoyed exceptional sport for most of the first week. However a change in wind direction over the weekend has seen the focus move towards the dam with the north bank near the tower fishing particularly well. A simple set up of an intermediate line with a Black or Orange Fritz is almost guaranteed to catch during this early opening period.

Multibait anglers have enjoyed outstanding sport from all areas of the south shore with Orange Gulp Eggs tipped with worm giving the best results. As expected in early season ledger tactics have caught most of the fish however, we strongly recommend a short cast of 20 yards is all that is needed to put you into the feeding zone.

Our regular anglers have reported some fantastic catches with Joe Watson from Stanley taking 8 fish on the fly for 28lb on opening day from the west shoulder of the Bay of Plenty.

Bob Ramshaw netted the best fish of the season so far at 7lb 8oz taken on the fly west of the Sailing club. Peter Burn from Witton Gilbert using new Gulp eggs at Hunter House landed the first tagged fish of season to claim the £200 sweep. Another 8 tagged fish are currently in the reservoir so the prospects remain good for those entering our optional sweep.

The hot start to the angling season shows no sign of cooling as anglers continue to record high rod averages and large numbers of 8 fish limit catches.

The shallow waters continue to attract and hold fish with the western areas at Hunter House and above the Sailing Club producing some excellent sport. Gordon Swain and Chris Williams fishing with fly enjoyed some terrific sport between Cronkley and Millshields. Chris landed our second tagged fish of the season at Millshields using an Orange Fritz. Gordon had one of his best ever fishing sessions using a Cat’s Whisker when he hit on a shoal of 3lb. Gordon was delighted with his 8 fish catch and said “These are some of the best fish I have ever caught at Derwent reservoir.” Our young anglers also enjoying some fine sport from the south shore with Murray’s Point seeing some consistent sport. 7 year old Benjamin Redmond from Witton Gilbert caught three cracking fish including a 3lber using Orange PowerBait Eggs combined with worm, a popular combination of baits when used on a ledger rig.
