Default Summer Water Temps in the UK?

Please excuse my ignorance coming from the high desert country of North Central Washington in the US. Here the trout fishing is nill from late June through August due to high water temps. When the surface temps of our lakes reach above 65 most responsible anglers wait until September.

So, to my question. Do your water temps stay less than 65 throughout the summer moths?

I was rather hoping to see something of a flurry of varying replies to this one , , , , , , , , , , , ,

For my part, I am based just about as far south in maniland England as you can get. The still and semi-still waters around here, (which are for the most part small and shallow), typically get up to around 70 degrees F in the height of the summer, and for my part, that is why I generally avoid them at this time of year.

The rivers on the other hand can vary somewhat. I imagine the basic reason for this would be their source water. The chalk-streams tend to maintain a reasonably steady temperature (courtesy of their subterranian source at about 50 degrees year round, and always provided that the water levels/volumes are good). Just now, the lower and mid areas of the Itchen and Test hover in the high 50's to low 60's, although I have to say that you will sometimes find small localised 'hot-spots' or 'cool spots' from time to time.
Meanwhile, spate rivers seem to be something of a total lottery to me

The highest I've measured on the Camel this year was 58.
It tends to be 53-58 from what I've noticed in the last year measuring in an ad-hoc way. I'm sure it could go higher, just never measured it so can't say what it would take.

Not surprised fishing was grim.
Getting very near the upper limit of tolerance for brown trout.
65+ degrees can actually cause mortality in browns, rainbows will show stress 2 degress lower, or in new money ,17 (62) degrees, in fish farms ,will result in all the aereators being turned on 24/7 to increase oxygen content and reduce temp, if it has not already been done!.(aereators that is!)

Default air temps

Your only right, within the first few hours we were giving ourselves a right telling off for not choosing a ressy with aerators One day I will file all of my accumulated knowledge in a way where I can access it - until then I will continue to stumble on

I have been making a point of recording temperatures this week.

Upper reaches of the Lodden in North Hampshire 56 to 58 Degs (F)
Mid and Lower reaches of the Itchen 55 to 62 Degs (F)
Meon (near Wickham) 57 Degs (F)

For the last week or so, the weather (and air temp) generally has taken a marked turn toward the cooler being much more typical for the season. Also, there has typically been a great deal more day-time cloud cover.

Is called experience!
sometimes experience brings knowledge.
However sometimes that brings acccusation of being a know it all, so tread carefully where you store that accumulated knowledge!

Water temp for the river I fish is sitting in the 15-17 degree centigrade mark at the mo. I've noticed the fish have really moved up into the riffles. Means the klinkhammer is working really really well for me and the fish are far from sluggish.

We don't seem to have a water temp problem up here except in very rare heatwaves. infact wading last week was decidedly baltic.
