Default The who's who of Fish Farming Meet-up...

Scottish Aquaculture. Big Conference.

"Interesting" line up of speakers. Roseanna's favourite industry apparently...

Anyone from SANA, WTT etc. attending? Might be useful to have a few stakeholders who are suffering the impacts of this industry's externalised costs present? Perhaps it might remind the minister of the effects of her favourite industry?

“In Scotland, Phil Thomas, chairman of the Scottish Salmon Producers Organisation, has for some time urged the ‘farming of the blue acres’. Now, the possibilities for Scotland are becoming clearer to the industry and the Scottish Government: the chance to reclaim its status as a technological leader; the synergies that could be achieved with renewable power; and the transformational impact that offshore fish farming could have on the Scottish economy.
Thomas, has the perspective to articulate the promise for Scotland and the globe of mariculture (or aquaculture, to use the all encompassing term for seafood production): “There’s an inevitable line of thought that runs: if you have a population that’s growing and that is eating more fish then demand is increasing at a time when wild catch fisheries are, in most parts of the world, reaching their limit or declining. The logic that flows from that brings you to aquaculture. There is huge potential there that is genuinely not developed yet. Even now it’s a relatively new industry that didn’t really start to come on stream on any kind of real scale until the early nineties.” When first investing, farmers understandably concentrated on a high-value fish – salmon.

Roseanna Cunningham - Minister for Environment said: “The aquaculture industry is vitally important to Scotland both economically and socially, in particular to many remote and rural communities. We want an industry that is competitive, growing, profitable, diverse and sustainable. It is already a major success story for Scotland, but the industry has potential that can be unlocked further.

I know nothing of the devolved politics of Scotland but, just a matter of interest, what party does the deluded sounding Roseanna Cunningham represent? Can't they be 'kicked in the ballots' or something?

Roseanna is a member of the Scottish National Party (SNP) - a minority administration enjoying it's first ever government and in power for another couple of years at least.

As a minority administration theoretically it could be held to task on any issue by an effective opposition. Unfortunately most Scottish political parties favour fish-farming without any seeming appreciation or concern about the industries impacts.

"But the main challenge is this - how do we encourage further
development while safe-guarding the environment; in the real world,
is it actually possible?"

And how long is this going to be discussed for...erm not long considering the pound signs are flashing away. This statement infers that they have not even looked at safeguarding the environment if , by their own admision, they don't even know if it is possible. Criminally reckless is the thoughts that come to mind.
