I see that even one of the correspondents from that ultra right nut job forum says

Where as we have animal rights groups here who are determined to ban fishing and government looking to make a buck; I tend to agree that this is over the top paranoia.
On another note if fishing were to be banned I suppose I will not need to purchase a license to fish.

Bobby

This article puts it all into perspective.

Kype,

Many thanks for putting some 'balance' into the mix.

That said, if the same thing were to happen here in the UK, then I wonder if we Brits would be as trusting of our government as you guys seem to be of yours . . . . . . . . .

Yes, thanks for posting that link kype, it describes the article which which prompted the thread as -

Quote:
the most absurd and irresponsible thing I have ever seen a major news outlet publish. There is not even a remote possibility that a standing president of the United States will outlaw fishing in America.
So ..... not a government conspiracy apparently AC, you can relax.

That is a stunning editorial oversight on the part of ESPN. Absolutely stunning. The gutless "mea culpa" from the editor might be even worse. He recognizes that he published this hack's op-ed as a news article, but his only correction is to say whoopsie and rebrand it as a column instead? Are you serious?

It doesn't matter if it's "just an opinion piece"! By running it on one of the biggest media outlets in the country, you've lent legitimacy to this bit of unhinged lunacy irrespective of how you choose to label it after the fact. So presumably you would also publish the Unabomber's manifesto, then simply shrug your shoulders and say, "Hey, that's just his opinion."

If ESPN had any integrity, the editor responsible would be looking for a new job today. Not holding my breath.

In 2 and a half years hence, Obama will be out and a Republican put in. You didn't get this sort of rubbish when Bush was president, no matter how stupid Bush seemed.

All I have to say is that we have a general election coming up shortly. Let us all write to our MPs and get from them direct what their attutude is the angling.

One thing for certain is that the Labour Party is anti-angling no matter what they say about the "Angler's Charter". We wouldn't have had all the problems with Draycote if the Tories had have been in power!

Dear Ron ,

Credit where credit is due - when I had assorted little seats on various Committees of the Salmon and Trout Association it was very noticeable to me that the then Out Of Power Labour Party delegates - Roy Mason and John Golding - showed up and took a very active pro fishing part on every one .

The Tories at the time were in power and were noticeable by their substantial absence .

I am not a Labour Voter - rather the reverse .

But I have and had a lot of time for both of those men !

Of the present crop I have no knowledge or opinion save to say that Martin Salter appears to be one of the sea green incorruptibles and whereas I detest his politics - he may well be ok for fishermen !

Over to you

Best wishes

Steve P `
