Saw one at the Lobster Hatchery in Padstow recently. Can't remember the exact figures but I think they occur, something like 1 in 4 million or was that 10 million? Can't remember which. I think one figure is for red ones (uncooked) and one for blue ones.

It's nice that it will now be safe in the nat. aquarium...though the other lobsters are going to think it's a poser.

I saw a huge albino lobster on a trawler of Scilly Isles a number of years back which i think they were planning to send to an aquarium too.

When I worked with the Marine Laboratory I did a trip to Rockall where we were doing some deep water trawling exercises. An electric blue lobster with bright (almost fluorescent) green antennae was brought up in a trawl. The deckhands seemed to think they were relatively common from deep water.

AND more colourful lobsters.

If you visit the site glaucus.org.uk you can see this extraordinary 'bright orange' lobster alongside the normal navy blue variety. Chances of dodging every bass, pollack and conger must be very slim when you so very bright.
Is it only the Channels Islands where these are found?

An unusual orange European Lobster, Homarus gammarus, was caught by a fisherman Steph Noel near Icho Bank, South of St Helier, Jersey, in his pots with the usual blue lobsters.Steph had only caught three similarly coloured lobsters in 27 years of fishing for them. The lobster was returned to the sea.

Fisherman David Gillingham caught a rare off-white Lobster, Homarus gammarus, in the Swinge between Alderney and Burhou in the Channel Islands (English Channel). The lobster was white on its underside with grey-green markings on its back and blue claws which were not as bright blue as usual. It was flown by air to Guernsey Aquarium which will be its new home.

In the book"The Nautical Chart" by Arturo Perez Reverte mention is made to uniquely coloured lobsters found off the coast of Carategna. Now I'll not tell you the lobster colour because its the final clue in a brilliant thriller.
The read is well recommended and ideal for Christmas. He is a fine author. Two other good reads from him are "The Seville communion" and "The Flanders Panel". There is another one--can't remember the name about drug running from N.Africa to Spain. --Talk about Altzeihemers!
