Default The tax man cometh

I read with interest in Tackle and Guns, that the latest targeted "tax catch up initiative" is to go after Fishing and shooting guides

We are being offered the opportunity to pay any outstanding tax now, incurring a small fine or, if they feel you owe more tax they will investigate "using various intelligence sources" to identify the teachers and instructors.
I rang them yesterday out of interest and was told they are aware of several guides/instructors who have paid no tax on this type on income. If you declare outstanding tax now they will look at your last six years. If you get investigated they will look at UP TO 20 YEARS!
Thankfully they were happy with my position but in order to avoid nasty shocks I suggest all angling instructors get their paper work in order.

The cynic in me thinks they may once again be going after the easy target, I'd suggest they would get more tax back from the Tarmac and rubbish disposal crowd who may or may not own caravans!

Heads up!

Anyone who is guiding, coaching, instructing or gillieing should be declaring their income from such sources anyway, they shouldn't need a wake up call from IR&C, they are basically stealing from the rest of us if they are not.

This can only be a good thing in the long run.
Those guides who take cash and do not declare it will no long be able to do so and this will hopefully drive out the part time guides and keep the pro guides in business for longer.

Would have thought it obvious to any of this group of people that they would be liable to pay tax and indeed national insurance, assuming that they are full or even part time self employed.

How does this work with Ghillies and their tips then? Surely all perks are taxable?

Yup, tips are taxable too, they should be declared, if the hotel and restaurant workers have to do it, then so should everyone else,

I have put in an honest tax return every year for the last 13 years on my coaching and guiding business. No problems dealing with the inland revenue at all

Good on you for being so honest Maybe you should also think about becoming a trade member on the forums and paying the required fees . After all you are advertising your services by putting your website address on your posts

If you make money then you should pay the tax! Most of us do so already. If this also helps pro guides and ghillies as a result then that can only be for the better. What the industry needs is more quality guides not just more in number. If we end with fewer but they are all profesional and making their living from fishing we should be supporting them. One of the most enjoyable parts of fishing for me and I am sure for many others has been the time spent in the company of some of these profesionals. Thank you to all of them for their company and advice, I look forward to meeting more of you.
