Default Salmon ... or Tuna Eating ...

Dar All,

A couple of weeks ago I ran the same topic on the Flemish Fly Fishing Forum, with a raw to follow immedately. Due to the limited stocks of fish in the oceans on one hand, and the impact of farmed salmon and other species on the other hand, I decided many many years ago, to never eat salmon or tuna ever again. I try to persuade other people, fishermen, friends, family, to do the same. As with drugs ... take the demand away .. and youget some results ... hopefully. The 'end of the line' movie, I believe took the entire aspect of 'speculation' away as to the fact that general the fish is losing the battle and that farmed fish are not a good idea. People fill their pockets, sure. Others enjoy what was once a 'delicacy' to e had over Xmas dinner and the like, Salmon. Now Salmon is the most common fish to be sold everywhere, raw, in steaks, smoked, frozen, in sushi, whatever. And ... it's cheap. Tuna ... yes, sure, blue fin, yellowfin ... a delicacy before, nowadays, any snackbar will sell you tuna. I wondered, as this forum is definately larger than the Flemish one what your thoughts are, do you still eat Salmon? Do you eat Tuna? (yes I spell them with a capital letter indeed), what about your own catch? I was astounded at the reactions I got on the Flemish forum ... I admit. I wonder about this forum ... as Scotland, Englad and ireland have even much more at stake ... Please let me know.

Tight Lines. Catch and Release (where sensible and allowed)

Sorry JJ, however I disagree.

While I do practice catch and release fishing my local river (Clyde) due to the low numbers of wild fish, I do eat tuna regularly.

I may be mistaken, however if it is the farming principle that you do not agree with, I presume you also grow your own veg and grains etc? In my opinion, farming is required to provide the population with the food we require, fish are no different to other farmed animals.

It is not exactly the farming principle that I do not agree with, but more likely the effect of salmon farms has on wild fish stocks in particular and the environment in general. As for tuna eating, stocks have dropped so spectacular over the recent years, it is alarming indeed. Same goes for a large number of other wld fish species. To back my non salmon and tuna eating views, please, have a look at the movie 'The End of The Line', if you get the chance ... particularly alarming ... I respect anyone's opinion off course and I am glad people have read this thread and maybe one or two join me ... you are the only one that has responded so far ... The same thread caused quite a stir and a lot of reactions, pro and con, on our own Flemish (small) forum on Fly Fishing. Enjoy your fishing and the Clyde. Tight Lines.

Aint cheap over here.
Even though the home market is flooded with the fish farm dross, still sells at a premium price through all the supermarkets.

I know ... heard that in Ireland ... like 60 euro a slice (smoked though).
Went for the Irish Stew at like 9 euro went with my religion and saved me guiness / red breast money on the side.

I love eating fish, or I did.
I don't eat salmon or tuna. Tuna is overused as a tinned fish I think - Tuna steaks - now they are good. If we managed the worlds fisheries better there would be more of these large predators to go around. I don't eat tuna any more, haven't for 12yrs or more. If I was to eat salmon, wild salmon would be my preference and I would eat very little!
Farming fish (salmon, trout, bass) all cause pollution problems. Particularly in the wild where estuaries are severely polluted and escapies and fish lice are damaging the wild stocks. Where farms are on land (bass & trout for instance) this is better controlled - but the fish pellets are made of sandeel generally. These are dredged off sandbanks, removing food from seabirds and wildfish and damaging habitats. It's just not a sustainable practice.
I also don't eat the bass I catch myself either- I just don't want to add further pressure. It's a personal choice. too many people, too many chefs using scallops and other unsustainably fished species... It depresses the hell out of me.

Great Thank you. Exactly my opinion ... I find it odd that no more fishermen in general and fly fishermen in particular don't seem to share this opinion however.

Well there are a few of us anyway!
People don't realise what the fish stocks in the oceans used to be like. All the statistics are based on the base level which was already hugely impacted by human intervention, so what is thought of as the 'healthy & prosperous' level is infact a long way from what should be there.
