Default Connaught Meeting with CEO of IFI, 17th October

A Chairde

I wish to inform all Connaught Anglers, that Dr Ciaran Byrne CEO of Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has accepted an invitation to meet and speak with us in Headford at the Anglers Rest on the 17th of October at 2.00pm.

It is important that anglers attend this meeting. A General Meeting of the Connaught Angling Council will take place afterwards.

regards

Secretary Connaught Angling Council

Default Where next?

Mayfly33C,

It was an interesting meeting with plenty of inputs and in some cases very passionate pleas! But what were the outputs, where next?

"To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd. To die, to sleep;
To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely,
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscover'd country from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprises of great pith and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action.--Soft you now!
The fair Ophelia! Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remember'd"

from Shakespeare's play Hamlet, 1602 (Shakespeare's actual title is - The tragedie of Hamlet, prince of Denmarke):

There have had been some great debates about organisations, competitions, personalities, etc on this forum about angling in Ireland (yes there were highs & lows) . In order to continue, I'll propose the following question to the fourm members?

What are you as an angler willing to give to conserve, protect, develop and promote our fisheries/water/fish in monetary,time, etc?

Sean

Sean
sean the answer is money. Funding and proper allocation of funding are badly needed.

Caz,

Money, in what context? Licence, share cert, etc? Who should manage, distribute, such funds? Accountability, corporate governance, clearly defined objectives, etc, spring to mind.

From a project management perspective, we are taking about stakeholders, scope, initiation, planning, execution, control & monitoring, closing for each catchment/system?

Will anglers buy into this? In term of money, what amount? An annual contribution, 30,50,100 euro?

I'm only trying to encourage an open discussion?

The current system of charging for salmon, trout and eels is mad. An angler should have a permit for all species of freshwater fish. One license for all species. Of course the money must go back into the development of the sport or there is no point.

Sounds like it was an interesting meeting.
shake your spear at Shakespeare...

Is the additional fee on all Irish salmon licences not to go to conservation?
Are these monies not being used for that purpose?
Time,money,fishery policing,electronic fish counters, fishery management,water quality, scientific data,angling tourism etc.

If somebody wanted to invest in Angling Ireland as a Business would this business be a good investment for a future return?

Just a suggestion- What about a licence/permit for course fish / fishing?
