It takes around 5 hours to drive from Newcastle to Elgin(halfway between Inverness and Aberdeen)

Start at the top and work your way back towards the north east and that way you will make the most of your time and trip.

Im sorry to disagree with Stufalkirk but the highlands to me is not around Perth but alot higher up and has alot more fishing than people appreciate.Spey dam,river laggan,loch achilty,loch shin,loch meague to name just a few, not to mention the numerous lochs of no names but with fine fishing.THAT is the Highlands.There is plenty of life after Perth and the fishing is special.

As far as the comment of it doesnt matter if you get lost.IT DOES matter to those who have to come and rescue you.The weather can change very quick and if your not prepared for it lives can be lost.

plenty accessable fishing in wester ross, re the char thing we have more than just a few char lochs within easy reach, but as some one has mentioned a good map and compass would get you out of trouble,easker1

Plenty of easy to get to fishing where getting lost is not likely to be a problem but if you do try any remoter places most important is to make sure someone knows where you are and when you will be back. Map and compass are no use if you don't know how to use them but its not difficult to learn though.

Plan B - stick a pin in a map and read what Bruce Sandisons book says about the area

plan B should be plan A, a guide book with every area, mmm yip

remote and extreme though scotland is in parts, the only survival skill required is not underestimating midges.

You just missed our best summer weather last week As above, take some skin so soft and a midge net. Let us know where you plan to go and how you get on. I'm hoping for a wee 1 nighter up the highlands way soon too, somewhere with easy enough access and pubs nearby.

No need to apologise! The line where it starts is a mythical one, but there are two adjacent stones in Stirling labelled "The Gateway to The Highlands!" That is probably just Stirling Council trying to claim it for tourism reasons though!

Personally I think Strathyre is where is starts - glorious scenery round about there, as well. I have been living in blissful ignorance of much of the locations you mentioned. Would you be so kind as to reply (or PM me) with details of what you consider to be the most promising locations?

i'd say in fishing terms and length of drive, the highlands is as far from the central belt as the south of England is.

It is snowing here in west central Scotland. Very wintery up Aviemore way
