Default Bhutan

Has anyone had any experience of fishing in Bhutan? I am lucky enough to be visiting this mysterious country for two weeks in March/April. I would love to take a fishing rod along but everything I've heard seems to suggest that it's very difficult to fish one of the many trout rivers without a guide. The focus of the trip won't be on fishing (unfortunately!) but I'm really debating whether it's worth taking along the minimum amount of gear in the hope that the opportunity presents itself. I would be very grateful if anyone on here has had experience of fishing in Bhutan and would be willing to pass on their advice. I will be based in Paro.

Many moons ago with the Accidental Angler.

I think you you should certainly take some flyfishing kit with you and I believe there are trout in the Paro-chu where you are based.

First read the Accidental Angler for the story of our trip.

Then I recommend that you contact Ugyen Rinzin (infos@yangphel.com.bt) who runs a business called Yangphel Travel (yangphel.com) - he is friendly, very knowledgeable and, most importantly, a keen fly fisherman. Get him to introduce you to Kencho who is an entertaining guide and also an enthusiastic fisherman.

Be prepared to travel and don't drink the water. Bhutan is an amazing place that will give you a glimpse of what medieval Britain must have been like (without the painted and carved "magic thunderbolts" hanging on the corners of houses!)

Hope you have a great time - do use a guide.

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Only just saw your reply, many thanks! I will get in touch with Ugyen as you suggest and take it from there. I've already read the Accidental Angler but had no idea that you had gone with Charles! I'm starting to think that it I will regret going and not fishing at all so hopefully I will be able to sneak off from sight seeing activities to get in a days fishing. I look forward to swapping stories at the Monnow social...

At least we can be sure that the stoning wasn't staged for the camera

There's an entertaining story behind that by the sounds of it!
