Default Trout fishing - Ireland

Afternoon all

I am seriously contemplating a trip across the water to Ireland with my 14 year old son this coming June. I have googled and come up with dozens of possibilities and short of flipping a coin don't know how to thin this down to a specific area.

So, we want to fly fish a selection of small to medium rivers and small to medium loughs; we can camp or take B & B, I will take the car across. We are happy to stay in different locations if necessary and to hire a boat where needed - I do want to avoid the larger loughs, too scary i'm afraid!!.

Can anybody venture an opinion on where we should base ourselves, perhaps 3 nights in each location?.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions on this.

I fish Ireland every year and I would definately reccomend the River Suir around holycross and Andrew Ryans stretch at clonanav fly fishing, He has a B&B but I usually head up from Cork (some great rivers there too) so have never stayed there. The lake I would reccomend would be Lough Carra, something magic about that lake, the water is crystal clear and its full of big trout, I fished it for the first time in August, turned out to be a flat calm all day and must have been around 25 degrees, we did see a trout about 4-5lbs weight swim away from the shore as we pulled in for lunch, but it is on the top of my list for this summer
Hope this helps Sean

Don't be afraid of the big lakes.. They are only scary on scary days... 99% of the time they are fine once you have someone boating you who knows the water.

I'd gladly take ye out on Corrib for a day if i'm free.. send me a PM
(free of charge of course)

Cheers
JJ

Good location is the Ballina area.Conn and Cullen beside you, Carrowmore not too far away, the MOY for the grilse and for a bit of fun Melvin 70 miles away. On balance for what you are looking for Conn might be the best look for camp sites and look up Kellys of Cloghans. Seamus regularly corresponds on this forum.
You have had already 2 great offers from true fishers

you could do worse than the north east, only an hour from dublin, 3 or 4 brillant trout rivers within 20 miles of each other... early june would be the perfect time for a chance of a 4lb+ brownie... drop me a pm if you want more info

...Or you could do Limerick ( fly to Shannon and fish the Mulcair, Morning Star, Maigue etc ) followed by a trip northwards to Galway and the lakes, or south to Kerry with Currane etc. Kerry has great scenery, beaches etc and Galway and Limerick have excellent pubs, music, restaurants , sport etc. And while we may disregard it, foreigners consistently tell me that Ireland is still extremely friendly compared to other european destinations. And we have the very best beer ever brewed - so come over and say hello!

Hi all, this has been an interesting thread for ideas because I have been thinking of visiting Ireland this May. I'm thinking of flying to Knock airport and hiring a car and seeing Co. Galway and a bit of Co. Mayo. Looking forward to visiting the land of my ancestry.

I will have a day for some fishing. Trout in a river on a fly would be what I'm after. I love the look of the peat stained rivers you have over there. Any suggestions local to Galway and Mayo for a decent day's river fishing?

Thanks, Justin.
