Default NZ Quarantine

Hi all
I'm sure that I have to declare any 'natural' flies that I bring in to NZ for trout.

Anyone know under what circumstances Quarantine would get nasty/ take them off me etc?

Nope. I meant natural as in tied with feathers rather than plastic.

"Fishing flies are permitted entry but all non-artificial material for fly tying must comply with the conditions of the Import Health Standard for Feathers. (http://www.biosecurity.govt.nz/imports/animals/standards/feacfoic.all.htm)".

I don't want to meet some quarantine official who got out of bed the wrong side and feels like they'll a little short on the month's quota.

Get your flies treated by a vet (vircon I believe) and get him to certificate them (cost's a bit ) but you will get no probs from NZ customs.

I had no problem arriving in NZ. Rather declare and be safe than not declare and land in trouble. Landing in Christchurch from Adelaide, I declared my box of flies - the customs guy asked when last I used them. When I said not in the last month, which I hadn't, he waved me through.

Hi Gaunty

I've been through it three times. No trouble with flies. I always say they are new. They mainly worry about wading boots and landing nets. If you have them they sometimes look at them under UV light. For fishermen what they are mainly worried about is didymo. Remember if you take wading boots, they must not be felt soled. Personally I leave my landing net at home. The only problem is it takes longer to get through customs in the "to declare lane". The first time it took an hour but quicker on subsequent visits.

Good Luck
Neville

As a kiwi, I can honestly say the MAF control guys at NZ airports are incredibly strict, but rightly so, as we have a lot to protect.

As Nev75 has rightly pointed out, untreated nets, felt soles and any gear that has been in the water needs a good dose of anti-bacterial spray or similar. Just remember to declare your gear as you go through customs, treated or not, as a fine or even confiscation will most likely be the outcome if they catch you out.

Flies wise, fur is really the only thing I would imagine they to scrutinise. Zonker strips, that sort of thing, as it's basically skin and hair which may or may not have been treated. Also, in case you were taking a fly tying kit with you, a hares mask is probably pushing it

You could always leave some of the hairier stuff at home, and buy some great NZ made flies, support the local fly fishing industry and all that

Enjoy your trip!

No issue with flies. Make sure all hiking boots, waders etc are clean. No felt.
