Default Which flies for Gran Canaria?

I'm off to Gran Canaria in early feb and naturally want to do some SWFF. We'll be staying in the Tauro valley not far from Puerto Rico.

I've already surfed the net and different forums, as well as my fly fishing and fly tying mags for inspiration. I've got enough mullet flies to tie but is there any other flies I should tie before I leave? Catching a barracuda on the fly would be fun too.

And any tips as regards places to fish will be greatly appreciated

I was there year ago. I fished beaches few times without any takes. Perhaps feeding Mullet with bread and then bread fly could have resulted some success.

Then I bought one day fishing trip to mountain lake and released more than ten Bass and sight casted to huge Karp many times but they did not take any trout fly I offered. One tackle shop guy said there are Bass in most of the lakes/ponds so you can "do it yourself".

Aint really many options for beach or outcrop fly fishing on the south of the island.
Mountains meet the sea and all that.
However, on the bright side are lots of man made outcrops in the form of harbours, jetys, wave breakers etc.
Puerto Rico has two of these areas where you can fly fish.
The first is the wave breakers due south of main harbour which is a rocky outcrop of about1000 yards long facing due south, at right tide and wind, fly fishing along its length is possible, but you must be nimble, as is huge boulders with big gaps between!
lots of cuda inhabit close in. big pike style flies, tandem hooked will do the job.
inside the breakwater is a deep channel which floods at incoming tide, is full of big mullet on rising tide, will take bread style flies, but must be sinking style.
Next to this channel is gorgeous beach, for about 600 yds, then is another rocky promitory at next harbour.
same applies there.
rock hopping on incoming tide for cuda.
dont try to fish inside harbour walls, is not allowed, and they are pretty heavy handed on tourists if they do!
Are lots of fishing trips available from harbour at rico, well worth the experience for big rays in feb.
regards
bert

Thanks for a great answer aenoon

After a bit of googling, I found this for future searchers....

Hi Mantog,

here´s some advice for satlwater fly fishing right now in Gran Canaria:

Maspalomas beach:
first and last daylight hours, you can fish for seabass (not big), spotted sea bass and bluefish (wire trace, remember)

In Mogan:
Amadores beach, in the jetty is very good for atlantic bonito (sarda sarda) and some snall barracudas, because there are lots of preyfish. The best moment is in the first daylight hours.

In Anfi del Mar, in the jetty, there are bonitos, cudas and bluefish, as in the Puerto Rico harbor. Here in the harbor you can fish for mullet with a bread imitation, a small fly tied with white marabou or lambs wool.

Hope you fish a lot. Let me know

Cheers,

Jose

We were stayed at Bahia Feliz 18 months ago, and that was cool; well hot really

This time it'll be to the island's most weather stable area and dipping a fly every sunrise before the rest of the gang wakes every morn.

We're taking three large cases, so there's probably space for 'a wee scotsman'

Just back from Maspalomas area.

Not easy fishing....very shallow for as far as can see, with boulders and rocks to catch whatever you throw out. Had to stop before long. Didn't see anyone else fishing from the shore except a few kids. A few locals fishing offshore from boats.

Did think that a fast sinking line, eg DI7, may slide over boulders, with floating fly, may have worked better, but may have lost that too.

Not as easy fishing as Madeira
