Within the month I could be somewhere on the Atlantic side, between Gibraltar and Cadiz. Anyone know if there are (freshwater) bass hereabouts? Or indeed any fish that might take fluff or lures?

Black bass in the reservoirs. Some of the higher lakes/reservoirs have trout in them.

On the coast, some excellent bass fishing. Surf beach - fish within 20m. Rocks and shallow rocky ground worth a go. Bream and mackerel and mullet galore.

Thank you Tailingloop. The ressies near Vejer de la Frontera are the Embasle de Celemin and Embasle de Babarte. Heard of them? However, what has brought me down a bit is this paragraph I came across whilst Googling;

'An angling licence is required for fishing in all reservoirs, rivers and estuaries in Andalucía. Recently, it has become necessary to take a course on Medio Ambiente (the environment) and pass a test before being granted a NIR (Número de Identificación en el Registry Andaluz) unfortuantely the course is only available in Spanish. Once you have obtained this number, you can then purchase your fishing licence which is obtainable from a number of Andalucian banks.'

I suspect I'll need a licence to fish in the sea. Do you know anything about this?

Yes you'll need one to fish in the sea, a different licence for different areas. You can buy one here : ..:: Tele Licencia ::.. Click on Licencias de Pesca, then Licencias de mar. Click on the zone you want to fish in, ie the South West Zone (Andalucia) then click on the Adquirir button under the Licencias Orilla (fishing from the shore) heading. Close the window which pops up (cerrar button) then click on Adquirir again. Tick the Standard tickbox, then click on the Introducir Datos button then fill out your name, address, phone etc and the Credit Card details.
Standard delivery 4-10 days at 43eur or more expensive if you need it faster.
You just have to supply a scan of your passport to the email address pedidos@telelicencia.com (or send to the fax number supplied) and they'll send you the license. I recently bought an annual fishing licence for my nephew in Madrid for the rivers on my UK debit card and it went through fine.
