Default Playa del Carmen

Hi All,

I have manage to book a 7 night vaccation in Mexico at Playa del Carmen and am planning to spend 1 day of guided fishing at Isla Cozumel and am wondering if any of you might know of people or outfits in Ascension bay that can provide a day of guided fishing that will not break the bank. Suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Just got back from my vacation in Playa del Carmen in Mexico. Had a splendid time based out of Sandos Caracol hotel. I booked a trip to Mexico on the account that I could not get a 7 night stay at Cayo Coco in Cuba so this was a good compromise. I scoured the net and came across this review 0031 Flyfishing | Flyfishing junkies

I further sent a mail to the main man who took these guys out. Their details can be found here http://www.bonefishcozumel.com

I booked 2 days with them. Fishing is a mixture of wading and from the boat. You get picked up from the ferry in Cozumel and then from there on its in the boat to their locations in the lagoons. In my two trips I was guided by Alberto who despite his young age knew how to handle the boat and some very tricky currents like a pro should. Add to that he tried his hardest to put me on the fish on each occasion . He could spot fish where I could not and really knows his stuff. We fished for bonefish on the first trip and I stopped counting after a while as I saw no point to to it not to mention what I lost. Alberto kept me on the water as long as was possible. On my second trip I mentioned that I wanted to try for Tarpon. The day did not start well as it was quite windy and patchy sunrise. I one shot at a tarpon that I managed to spook and a couple of shots at a meter long barracuda which I also managed to spook . I asked to go back to the bones and in no time had my reel screaming back to the backing. We stopped early due to the wind but had caught enough to keep my memories to my next trip. If you are looking for an alternative to Cuba and or want mexico at reasonable prices ( pick up, drop off, lunch and drinks) then please give these guys a go as they know their stuff and were very friendly. Point of caution do not go to all these tourist offices or touts who promise you everything to get your money. Last point no pictures as I forgot to take my camera with me and my blackberry would not charge up for some reason.

I actually fished with Alberto in Nov last year and he was a really good guide who put me onto loads of bones, in far from ideal conditions (hair raising ride in the panga from the dock to the lagoon). I too lost count, which is always good!!

The bones were of a pretty decent stamp too, averaging around 5lb with a couple bigger. Certainly better average size than Ascension. Also had one decent shot at a good permit.

Very good price as well. I think I paid $225 for the day

Hengmaster spot on for Alberto. I had lots between 4 to 5 lbs and one on the last day that I estimate at 8 to 10 lbs. The prices you mention were slightly up for a 8 hr day but these guys never looked at the watch If there were fish to be caught. The last day boat ride to and from the flats was a bit hair raising but they got a new skiff with a 60 hp engine so Alberto was pretty much in control.
