Default Ireland - where do we start?

A group of 4 have been travelling up to Lochinver in North West Scotland for a few years now, fishing the trout lochs and a bit of fishing from the rocks for pollack.
  1. Great scenery
  2. Prolific trout loch fishing
  3. Good sea shore fishing
  4. Good pub within walking distance of
  5. Very reasonable self catering cottage

The chaps are looking for a change and Ireland has been suggested. We know nothing about it but looking for something similar to what we get in Scotland. Where do we start? Can anybody with experience offer advice? Where to head for? Loughs to fish places to stay, coast to fish?

Go West ... more great fly fishing water than you can believe ... I'd drop a pm on this forum to jj o'maley. I read loads of interesting posts he wrote here on Ireland and especially Lough Corrib. One of my favourites in Ireland is Lough Inagh. Check connemara hotels hotel in connemara 4 Star Connemara Hotel | connemara-galway | connemara-hotelhotel ...

I would say when is also important .A professional Guide is essential to get the best out of the great limestone loughs,as these guys can be in great demand, I would book in good time .Whatever you do , do not venture onto any of the big lakes without guideance , Lough Mask in particular .

The Glenmore Rivers Sporting Estate - Home offer the whole thing with the Finn fishery; the Rivers Finn and Reelan. It is on these two spate rivers that most of the fishing is done.

Around the head-waters are seven mountain loughs (lakes) where free-rising wild brown-trout to over 2 pounds may be caught.

And in association with other fisheries, they can offer our guests access to beats on numerous other renowned salmon rivers. The River Mourne’s Sna beat, the Galway Weir, The River Moy’s Ridge Pool or the classic Carnroe Beat on the River Bann are just some of those available

Was stuffed full of fish this yr too. C+R also

arjxh56 ,
The scale of the big lakes over here is not always appreceated by visiting anglers used to the resevoir scene in Britian .Lough Mask is 22,000 acres in area and contains shoals of rock that have been described as like church steeples .I and my fishing friends who are all very experienced in boat fishing would not dream of trailering a boat to Mask and going fishing on our own .We have boats on Corrib ( 42,000 acres) and are used to big water , but Mask is special .I dont want to appear alarmist , these loughs are a delight for all to enjoy,an angler from my home club won a major competition on Mask this year.

I agree . don't go to Mask alone in a boat. You're in the middle of the water, and suspect water to be deep, suddenly it's shallow like a foot, depending on lake levels. You hit that with a boat ... good luck. Corrib is safer alone, lets' say, provided you find someone to let you a boat, who knows where you should go and stay ... then problem would be finding fish. Probably the safest of all big waters if you want to venture out alone, in the West, is Carra. That is why I would start out, if I were you, by something a bit smaller. Corrib, Mask, they seem like a 'sea' almost. Or ... best advice, a guide, and yes ... book well in advance, depending on when you guys wanna go.

Kerry would be worth a look, although I love Mayo as a county aswell. Brilliant sea fishing in Kerry too and Lough Currane is supposed to be special. Get yerselves over here boys!
