Default Skiing and Fishing in British Columbia

Hi all,

I've just got back from skiing in Whistler (BC) and took a day's fly fishing on the Squamish river with a local guide.

I had a great day out and I even managed to catch a sea-run cutthroat trout. Beautiful fish and a lively scrapper. Fantasic scenery, big (but cold water ) mountain river, saw 4 bald eagles as well. Can't recommend it highly enough. Plus I improved my casting (which needed doing!) as my guide showed me a few tips on improving my technique.

Next time I go skiing in Canada then I'm definately going to take my rod along.

The Squamish is a great river eh? I fished it for sea run char (bull trout and even managed a Steelhead from it. I was mainly fishing it in and around Squamish itself. Saw some bears and hundreds of eagles especially around their nesting site at Brackendale.

Like you I cant speak highly enough of this part of the world. Been back in the Uk for 4 months and already itching to book my flights back!!

The Squamish is certainly totally different to anything I've ever fished before. To be honest it was something on the off-chance. I hadn't even considered going fishing as I was out there skiing but I popped into the shop and I saw the pictures of the bull trout and I thought ... why not? .

Even in March I saw 4 bald eagles when there are very few salmon for them to feed on. The fishing was hard (took all day to winkle out the one I did catch) but it was a fantastic experience. I'll definately go again when I return to Whistler for another skiing holiday.

I was at a meeting in Whistler during the summer. I had a good time and learned to some degree to spey cast. Did you go through Whistler Flyfishing?

I managed to catch some Bull trout, salmon and trout. I thought it was a nice break from the meeting.

Were those Bull Trout as in the seperate species of char or the sea run Brook Trout (sometimes nick named Bull trout)?

From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams.
Come away, O human child!
To the waters and the wild
With a faery, hand in hand,
For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

rgsiii, Yes through Whistler Flyfishing. Excellent guide, very friendly. I as shown how useful the spey cast is (even on single-handed rods) but I was more concenrned at getting my basic cast correct

t1978d, as I understand it the Bull Trout are an entirely separate species (although they are a char I believe).

They are a different species in the char family Salvelnius, look similar to a lake trout (another char) don't they, but according to another thread Sea Run Brook trout (another member of the char family) are sometimes nick named Bull trout, oh I need to lie down now.
