Default Finnmarksvidda (Norway) August 2011

Large streamer for large grayling. That's how it works in the North of Norway

In August 2011, I had the opportunity to join some friends from Sweden on a float trip on the Finnmarksvidda. This is the most northern area in Norway, close to the city of Alta.

The river seemed to be infested with very large grayling! The guys from Sweden started with some classic nymphs such as pheasant tails and they were immediately catching plenty of grayling in the first pools. However, I was convinced that there had to be larger grayling here. So I choose a large streamer... an imitation of a male stickleback in spawning colors. My first 5 casts gave me 4 grayling that were above the 50 cm mark. I was a happy flyfisher...

I made a small video report about our trip and hope that you will enjoy it.

Looks like you guys had a great trip and met some lemmings too

Those 'Drytech' food bags are surprisingly good too. Personally the Wolffish stew is my favourite

It is hard to get there. Because it is so far upstream. That is also the reason why nobody else fishes there...

Niklas from altafishing.com is a guide who can get you there. Do not go without a guide if it is your first time or when you have little floating experience.

PS: the soundtrack is from E. Vedder from the movie 'into the wild'.

Thanks Docsalmo.
Actually, I found the Altafishing site and sent Niklas a mail. 2 friends and myself fancy getting up there next year, but so far I've heard nothing back from him. I'll send another one out later this week.
Best regards,
Del.

Hello Del

You have to be patient when you deal with these guys from the North. I have the same experience.

I am sure that Niklas will be in touch with you soon. Let me know if he doesn't. Then I will push him a bit from my side

Take care
Dominic
