Default Family Holiday/Fishing Trip Destinations

Hi all,
I have managed to negotiate a deal with the other half. The deal is that i can pick where to go on our family two week holidays and will be allowed to stay on for a extra week by myself to do some fishing. The deal breaker was that I'm not allowed to do any fishing whilst on holiday with the family .
Our first trip will be to Disneyland and I will travel down to Florida Keys.
I'm also thinking Cuba would be a good all round destination.
Any other recommendations where I can include both a family holiday and some good SWFFing ?
The weeks fishing will have to be within a drive or short flight from the family holiday destination. Even better if it's on the doorstep.
Also the family holiday will need to be within a direct flight from the UK.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Cheers,
Mark

Well, down in Cuba you would have access to some spectacular bone/tarpon/permit fishing. The only problem is you would have to fly to a different country first, like Mexico or Dominican Republic since there (as of now) are no direct commercial flights to Cuba from the USA that i am aware of.

Lots of salt water fly fishing opportunities to be had in the Caribbean. Tons in fact. Some places get hit harder than others. Not to mention of course all the places you could go in Floridian waters. There is also Redfish in the SE USA coastal marshes.

All those locations are a short flight or drive.

If i was in your shoes, i would spend your time in Florida with the family, then spend a few days in the Florida/Louisiana area. Then i would hop a flight to someplace like Belize, Venezuela or Cuba.

Vans,

Thanks for the advice , much appreciated.

I'm thinking of doing Cuba and Florida on two separate trips. Then I would concentrate the weeks fishing in those separate areas.
Somewhere between them I'll have to get married as I've been engaged for 5 years
Now where could I go on my honeymoon......

I may have the ideal spot for you.

I have been going to Sebastian in Florida for 10 years or so and like it so much we bought a holiday home there.
We used to stay in Oyster Pointe time share resort, for around 800 bucks a week you get a good sized fully equipped self catering unit. The best bit is that for another 50 bucks you get a weeks worth of resort boat hire (25hp outboards, bait fish 3 people in comfort or 1 fly fishing and 1 spinning)
The resort in on the Indian river lagoon, near Sebastian inlet and while you can't go into the ocean on the resort boats they certainly give you acess to some very good fishing.
Disney is around 50 miles away as is Cape Canaveral, Vero beach with all the shopping and restaurants is 10 miles in the other direction.
There are two municpal golf course where it will cost you around $30 for a round in high season and a lot less in summer.

Drop me a PM if you need more info

Starsky,
Chris is giving you good info. Indian river lagoon has great Redfishing and Sebastian inlet has good Snook fishing. Unless you have lots of "green" don't waste your time going to Cuba or Venezuela if you are not planning on staying at a top guided fishing camp and spending lots of money.
I live and guide in the Keys and you will also spend big bucks and probably get a guide who will yell at you unless you do your homework or get a good recommendation from someone who knows the keys well. There are many great guides down here and also lots who are mediocre it's buyer beware.
You could also consider Mosquito lagoon and North florida as the Redfishing is great in these areas also.
Over the years I have found that fishing unfamiliar areas is a bit of a waste of time unless you "pay the piper" and hire a good guide.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your excellent advice.

This was my plan,

Hire a villa near to Disneyland with the family. Do the family bit for 10 days and then see them safely on to the plane back across the pond.
My option then was to either fly or drive to the keys area and hire a cheapish room somewhere for about a week. I would then hire a guide for all my fishing days out there(i have a list of some who come recommended). I would like to target different different species of fish to vary the fishing and utilise my time in the Keys.
Im up for all suggestions though and thanks for the input and i will have a look into the places you mentioned.
The honeymoon comment was tongue in cheek and if i even mentioned that i might fish on my honeymoon to my other half it will be the quickest marriage/divorce in history
Cheers,
Mark

Hey Mark
How about NZ? You can trek around in hire car and stay in bnb and either diy fishing or book some guided days or half days if flush.
We did this years ago when my first was 7 months and it was a great trip for all.
Cheers

Steve

Or fly to the barrier reef for a couple of weeks then have a week fishing the great swf of the north coast of Australia.
