Default Going to Slovenia 1st time

My wife and I will be going to Slovenia for our first time in 4 weeks. We will be at the Penzion Boka, Žaga 156 A, 5224 Srpenica. Any advice on out of the way places to fish would be greatly appreciated. I don't mind a good hike to get away from "it" all.

Cheers,
james

I just finished a week of flyfishing in Sloveni(j)a and
Maybe they should change the name of the country to Stockienia. When a guide on Baca river tried to convince me that what I see and catch is "wild steelhead"it was just enough...
And guess what: their major improvement for the next few years (so they say) is that they will start to stock with tons of their local trout (salmo marmorata) kind of stockies. They are very proud of that... but it will just finish the job of converting their rivers to stocked ponds. WOW
But you have some nice restaurants in the nearby Kobarid. I recomend you spend your money there instead.

This is true, that most of the country's well known or publicised rivered are very heavily stocked, but it is not so in all of the country.
Seach posts on here for Slovenia, and you can see there is also a wild side of the country. BlueOne on here is Slovene, and one of the ones fighting for keeping rivers unstocked. I have spent time with him, and he has shown me a vastly different picture to the ones that you have seen.

Regards,
Steve

Or, failing that, get a map and strike off all the rivers promoted by the tourist agency and, hey presto ...

I was hoping for some hints, by private message, but no luck. I had planned to go off the main channels and hike into the tribs, or maybe even a high mountain lake, if there is one. I have 5 days left before I leave, still looking at google maps/earth in that area for clues. I hate rubber fish, we campaign against them in Oregon every year.

cheers,
jms

Hi Wingnut,

Just got back from a holiday in Slovenia yesterday and while I only managed to squeeze in a couple of sessions I looked at a lot of water across the NW - Mostinica, Soca, Baca, Idriji, Sora and Radovna.

I think you're in a good spot for the kind of fishing you are looking for.

I recced Soca above Bovec at the weekend and spotted normal size (wild?) BT in the likely spots at tail of pools or behind rocks at the side of pools. With water clarity and the white river bed they seem to like security of deep water close by. That stretch would be athletic fishing, scrambling over rocks and through trees and scrubs. If like the small wild trout on Radovna they won't be fussy and might take dries. On Radovna catch-and-release stretch I had fun on dry fly simple CDC ISBBs upstream onto the tail of pools or a Klinkhammer for searching fast shallow stretches.

We hired a mini-raft and came down the Soca from 10k above and into Tomlin. River really wide by then. River pristine at first but not so clear or trouty by Tomlin (more barbel and chub spotted). Low frequency of trout but good size plus grayling and chub. Likewise, fish mainly spotted around deep pools or alongside overgrown bankside stretches with occasional fish spotted in shallows. I had a face mask and braved the cold water to float down a few stretches looking for fish. If tackling here looked like sinking line and lures / big tungsten nymphs.

Some impromtu stone turning sessions down this section revealed some pale heptagenids and bull heads (sculpins). Looking in a small alpine stream (Mostinica) in hills above Stara Fuzina revealed some giant stone fly lava, plenty of caddis lava plus a some dying mountain Olives with v long tails.

Tourist offices very helpful. Distances are not huge between rivers and if you have a hire car you have options. Tickets seem to be available at restaurants near the river.

Hope this helps. Oh, one last thing, bring your waders. Short on space I didn't take mine and just used Tevas. This was challenging to say the least in the higher up alpine stretches where the water was pretty cold.

My best resource before leaving was searching the threads from Stevel and BlueOne. It certainly gave me the lowdown on the stockie situation. The tourist board also produce a document Sport-fishing Slovenia that I downloaded from somewhere as a PDF (can't remember where). I can email you a copy if you send your email via PM. It has club contacts.

I took a selection of rods from 6'6' to 10' and just used the 10' 5w. Extra length handy to avoid drag in the fast streamy flows.

Have a great time.

Nigel

Beyond well known commercial places, such places can also be found. Either with research on your own or by getting info (increasingly hard) by some local guy.

Unfortunately this water was unfishable at the time of wingnuts visit, but one other was ok:

BlueOne, I was a bit short of time to contact you this time, hopefully will approach you next season, so here are some photos
from a tourist destination in Slovenia, a couple of weeks ago:
The water was clear and low, not everyone was catching fish, but I managed
to hook some graylings, a few smaller browns on the lower parts and of course some good fighting rainbows and lost a few huge ones. Its really a tourist destination - there were 20 flyanglers to buy an expensive licence on a Sunday morning in the shop - I heard English, Italian,German ,French speaking folks and met two flyfishers from Alaska(!!) on the river on my way back to the car nearby the river I disturbed a beautiful deer/roe who run after it saw me
