Hi Wingnut,
Just got back from a holiday in Slovenia yesterday and while I only managed to squeeze in a couple of sessions I looked at a lot of water across the NW - Mostinica, Soca, Baca, Idriji, Sora and Radovna.
I think you're in a good spot for the kind of fishing you are looking for.
I recced Soca above Bovec at the weekend and spotted normal size (wild?) BT in the likely spots at tail of pools or behind rocks at the side of pools. With water clarity and the white river bed they seem to like security of deep water close by. That stretch would be athletic fishing, scrambling over rocks and through trees and scrubs. If like the small wild trout on Radovna they won't be fussy and might take dries. On Radovna catch-and-release stretch I had fun on dry fly simple CDC ISBBs upstream onto the tail of pools or a Klinkhammer for searching fast shallow stretches.
We hired a mini-raft and came down the Soca from 10k above and into Tomlin. River really wide by then. River pristine at first but not so clear or trouty by Tomlin (more barbel and chub spotted). Low frequency of trout but good size plus grayling and chub. Likewise, fish mainly spotted around deep pools or alongside overgrown bankside stretches with occasional fish spotted in shallows. I had a face mask and braved the cold water to float down a few stretches looking for fish. If tackling here looked like sinking line and lures / big tungsten nymphs.
Some impromtu stone turning sessions down this section revealed some pale heptagenids and bull heads (sculpins). Looking in a small alpine stream (Mostinica) in hills above Stara Fuzina revealed some giant stone fly lava, plenty of caddis lava plus a some dying mountain Olives with v long tails.
Tourist offices very helpful. Distances are not huge between rivers and if you have a hire car you have options. Tickets seem to be available at restaurants near the river.
Hope this helps. Oh, one last thing, bring your waders. Short on space I didn't take mine and just used Tevas. This was challenging to say the least in the higher up alpine stretches where the water was pretty cold.
My best resource before leaving was searching the threads from Stevel and BlueOne. It certainly gave me the lowdown on the stockie situation. The tourist board also produce a document Sport-fishing Slovenia that I downloaded from somewhere as a PDF (can't remember where). I can email you a copy if you send your email via PM. It has club contacts.
I took a selection of rods from 6'6' to 10' and just used the 10' 5w. Extra length handy to avoid drag in the fast streamy flows.
Have a great time.
Nigel
