Default Wick or Skye?

Hi,
just got back from my annual brown trout trip and am planning next years. I know it's the wrong time to go but being a teacher I can't get enough time off at the correct time of year to really go after brownies. My friend, myself and my dad are unsure whether to go for Skye or for Wick. Anyone got any recommendations?
cheers.

That's a tricky one James, but I've been to both areas several times, and done both this season too, so here's my thoughts...

Holiday with some fishing, or a fishing holiday? If the former, then it's a no-brainer... Skye. Much more to see and do on Skye than in the whole of Caithness. Dramatic landscapes, walks, climbs, loch fishing, sea fishing etc. Much of Caithness, or at least the fishy parts are as interesting, scenery-wise as the Fylde. If the latter, then it has to be Caithness/Wick. You're obviously aware of the legendary Caithness lochs such as Watten, St Johns, Heilen etc which, Storr lochs excepted, even on a bad day will give you better sport/fish size than any of the Skye lochs which are, at best 'fun', with small fish. The Storr lochs are the jewel in the crown on Skye, but the best of it comes early season... saw plenty of free boats on the Storrs last week.

Skye is a magnificent island and all round destination with fishy diversions, and they paint their houses and pubs yellow, orange, white and blue. In Caithness they paint everything grey.... but out-and-out trout wise, knocks Skye into a cocked-hat.

cheers for the reply. I was leaning towards Wick but you've definitely tilted the scales a little further towards there! Have fished the limestone lochs of Durness before and had some belters out of there so will look forward to a couple of days on the limestone around Wick. The great thing about fishing holidays in August is the fact that you're pretty much on your own out there and the fishing beats that in Worcester!
Tight lines,
James
