Default DIY Alaska

The cost? About £3,500 for 12 days fishing. That's the bottom line right at the top! It's about a third of the price of a guided trip. The catch? It's DIY. I've been DIYing Alaska every other year for the past 20. I'm looking for two companions to join me in July 2012. Three is the ideal number. The float plane I charter can carry three people, an inflatable raft, camping and fishing gear to the lake at the headwaters of the Kanektok River (google it). We wave goodbye to the pilot, pump up the raft, load the gear and float down the river, one man on the oars, the other two fishing. We camp on the bank at night. Twelve days later we reach the Eskimo village where the river enters the sea and catch an air taxi back. This is not a holiday. This is an adventure. And it is DIY. We take it turn to row the raft, help put up the tent, cook, wash the dishes, gather firewood. And we do it in the wind and rain which are typical for this part of the world. We wash in the river - it's snow melt - and take whatever nature throws our way. You don't have to be an athlete but you do have to be reasonably healthy. I'm a far-from-fit 53-year-old pen pusher. Flights are ex-Dublin but could be ex-somewhere else. Any takers?

I have rafted this river on more than one occasion with Dave Duncan & Sons guided trip has in the past worked out depending on the $ to the £ rate around £4000 but we only get 7 days to float the 92 miles from the lake to the sea.

Your offer of 12 days for £3500 is good value.

July is a great time to visit, almost 24 hr light, its a river full of fish, grayling are coming back strong, healthy population of trout, thousands of sockeye, chum, but the king run isnt as good as it was. Lots of Dolly Varden enter every year with the pink run on every even year 2012 next pink run year.

AK can be a harsh environment, pack good quality rain gear, & a sleeping bag rated for autumn - winter, depending on the time of year midges can be a pain at the camp site, you need to be prepared, if you are its not a major issue.

Have fun, great way to see the wildernes of Alasks Im planning on going back in 2012 but Im for the comfort of the upper base camp.

You've been there and bought the T-shirt. Caught a nice rainbow and a couple of fiesty chum off a gravel bar straight across from Duncan's upper base camp in 2010. Thought of the guests there sitting down to their steak and glass of red wine as a I struggled to fry up spam and eggs in the driving rain. If I get a team together I plan to be on the river from July 14, and should be around until July 26. If you are there at that time and spot three men in a float, shout: "How's the spam?"
And drop in for a cup of real tea. They don't make it properly over there, do they?

No takers on this side of the pond.
It's the second time I've gone fishing for travelling companions on the forum and the second time I've blanked.
Got two American pensioners to sign up so I'm on my way.

I did my first destination trip on this river with the Duncans through Peter Cockwill in 96, who is still doing them!
Pete told me about a bunch of guys he met on one trip doing it DIY, they just pitched tents on a small island. When they woke up, there were bear prints all around the tents!

And I bet if you look around the professional camps there'll be just as many bear tracks. It's bear country.

A close encounter with a Kanektok bear.

Yes its bear country, but its their country, and boy do you need to show them respect.
