Hi,

The places you can see on websites and magazines in the seychelles are mainly private offering all inclusive packages or remote islands only reachable by boat.

You can find some bonefish in the main archipelago (Flats said to be near Mahe airport) but most of the islands are high and seem to have limited flats-like places. I've heard about really good reports on anything but bonefish, fishes in the 1-5 kg range, great on a 8 line.

I'm thinking about a sailboat trip from Mahe to one the outter islands, the closest being Plate but Cosmodelo, Farquar and others look really amazing. The issue right now is pirates from somalia. Boat rental services won't let you explore wherever you want. Every 6 months they asses the risk and give recommendations. Was planing on three weeks total, the atolls are a few days from Mahe.

All boating to the outer islands have been banned until further notice. You will not be allowed to go outside the inner ring without a very expensive armed escort. There are bones at Praslin, but you are going to have to purchase some local knowlwdge.

Sorry, but while i rate the Seychelles as the best destination of them all, a do it yourself fishing trip just aint gonna happen.....For what very little there would be available, you really would be better off thinking again, if of course the primary purpose of the trip is to be centered around fishing.

My apologies for being the bearer of bad news

They should start a Charter Service to go out and shoot pirates when the fishing is slow

Do you mean anytime or until the ban avoiding to get out of the main archipelago is on ?

As someone involved in anti-piracy security, I would not go anywhere near the Seychelles on a DIY trip. Only go fully planned and with reputable guides and have a good risk assessment done!! If in any doubt talk to the High Commission.

The Somali Pirates (some) have been pushed off the Horn of Africa (2010) and have seen that there are good pickings in the waters surrounding the Seychelles, (its only 600 miles and the use of Motherships has increased the range of the Pirates).

Some smaller Islands now have soldiers patrolling them to deter Pirates making bases on them.

Mexico is good!!!

Travel to Abaco instead, same size Bonefish and no pirates (at least not the kind that will rob&kill you:-))

The Seychelles operations that are still available are nearly all land based.

That means Alphonse, Farquhar and Desroches. Farquhar has a small lodge, the other two have hotels.

There were plans to open Cosmo etc last Winter - but it was cancelled at the last minute due to an increased pirate risk.

St Brandons is currently about the only liveaboard trip available in that region (runs from Madagascar I think). Look at the Flycastaway site for more info. Allegedly the most prolific bonefishing on the planet...... It is a 30 hours sea crossing -so I wouldnt fancy a DIY version of that in bad weather.

There are options based in Mosambique (sp!) - but they are dodgy from an insurance perspective.

Hope this helps.
