Lucky you! I have fished up that way and I do have some things to offer you to make your trip enjoyable. I have tied flies for my friends and me for fishing up that way for many years.
First of all be ready for the bugs! I have used Ben's DEET mixed with Skin So Soft but I now am using 100% cedar oil here in Vermont in the most bug infested are of the state equal to the area you will be. The cedar (tree) oil really works for mosquitoes and black flies. I don't know if they will help with no see'ums or deer flies yet. If you have never experienced pests like these you may wish for a head net.
Secondly contact Bryant Freeman Eskape Anglers at:
Traditional and Classic Salmon Flies Bryant is not only an excellent fly tier but his flies are designed to catch fish as you know there are both fishing flies and pretty flies to frame for the wall. Bryant knows Atlantic salmon and was born on the Medway River in Nova Scotia. He outfits anglers for all of the Canadian Atlantic salmon rivers not simply New Brunswick. His uncle Emmy and his dad Lou taught me to fish Atlantic salmon and tie Atlantic salmon flies on the Medway River in Nova Scotia back 33 years ago when I first met them. Tell Bryant, Bobby advized you to contact him.
The fish like small flies.
Here is a list of flies to have.
Black Bear in Green, Yellow, Red Butt #10 - #6
Thunder&Lightening tied with black bear or moose wing #10 -#6
There is a little black fly tied on #14 -#10 with silver tip, black ostridge body, guinea fowl died king fisher blue throat and moose wind tied short flat and close to the body.
Blue Charm, Hairy Mary #12 - #6
Green Highlander hairwing #10 - #6
Black Ghost tied as a salmon wet fly #10 - #6
Carter's Bug dry fly (Bryant ties the best ones) #6 - #4
Slime Green Muddler #8 - #4
Dry flies #14 - #8 Royal Coachman Wulff, White Wulff, no hackle #16 - #10 Lime Green Stonefly
I tie my Little Greenie with bright florescent green 6/0 Danville thread synthetic florescent insect green yarn made into a dubbing with whitetail deer body hair from the top back of the deer. It is stiff hair and will lay flat as it is tied in. When trimming off the butt hairs leave it 1/16 – 1/8 inch or about 3 mm long and whip finish the head to force the butts to stand upright a bit it will appear as a half hackle and give the fly legs and it helps the fly when it is skated. Fish will take it dead drift or skated using a down and across stream drift.
Also include a #16 - #12 Black Caddis pupa tied on a Partridge Yorkshire Sedge. I have had salmon swallow them so as to be hooked way back in the roof of the mouth.
Be sure to include a #7 rod and something like a 9ft #5 rod as it may be very useful as well as Maxima Chemelion and Muclin Green.
Good Luck!
Bobby
