DIY fishing around Xelha/Akumel, Mexico....any advice welcome!
Hi
I'm considering a family holiday (massively influenced by fishing opportunities for yours truly, naturally) along the maya riviera in Mexico, notably at Xelha, a few miles north of Tulum (I'm looking at the Grand Sirenis hotel). I plan on taking my saltwater fly gear as it seems that generally the fishing is very good indeed along the coast if you avoid anywhere directly in front of resorts and go early/late, which suits me fine. Has anyone fished this area from the shore and which areas might be restricted? I know further south at Boca Paila and Si'an Kaan there's supposed to be some superb DIY fishing though that requires a car (definitely worth doing by the sounds of things though) but I'd also like to fish daily on foot near the resort. Any pointers gratefully received! Also I did look at the Sandos Caracol resort just north of Playa Del Carmen, good fishing again, but was a bit wary of one or two recent reports about warnings being posted up on the beach about being mugged (dude....take my wallet but please don't take my Zero Gravity !!)
Any info or experience gratefully received!
