Hi guys

I am in the Northland region of NZ and will be making my way down towards Rotorua/Taupo over the coming days. I would really like to sample some of the excellent trout fishing in the area, particularly steelhead but I would be open to suggestions as I am not too clued in on what there is on offer.

I have no gear with me on my travels so I will need to hire it, and I would be interested in a guide (price dependent) or even a friendly FFF buddy if anyone here will be in the area?

Just booked a day of river trout around Taupo on Monday with Adam Wallis at Go Fish Taupo. Cannot wait!

strongly recommend steve and trudie at tarata fishaway.we stopped with them three times ,the fishing ,food and accomodation were absoluteley great.worth the journey,i wish we could go again.fishing of a lifetime!!!

Hi Rob, you will have a good day with the guides you have booked. If you fancy a couple of days of do it yourself fishing afterwards then I can recomend Turangi, there are lots of motels and lodges for a bed and you can hire all the gear from Sporting Life in the main mall in Turangi. The river is an easy walk from most of the motels, and the fishing at this time of year can be superb! Talk to Jarrod or Graham at Spoting Life and they will point you in the right direction.
I will not be back down that way untill sometime next month, but if you are staying that long I will happily take you for a fish.

I booked a guide when I was in Taupo a few years back. The river and surrounding countryside is absolutely stunning. When we arrived at the river we were greeted by a big brownie in the pool that must have been 8-9lb. Needless to say I didn't catch it.

This was one of my first experiences of fly fishing and although I did catch some fish I don't think my guide was possibly the best. He certainly knew his stuff but didn't explain things very well and knowing what I do now it certainly wasn't the easiest place to fish. On several occasions I thought I was going to get washed downstream!

I'd love to go back now I have some experience and can actually cast.

Turangi is definitely the place to go. The river is very accessible, and there is plenty of help and advise around town for someone new to the area.
