Default Connemmara

Hi all

I'm off to Roundstone in Connemmarra next week. Not a fishing trip but hoping to get a day in. Now I know this may sound like sacriledge to some but the big waters of Mask and Corrib don't really appeal. I more interested in fishing for brownies in small streams or the hill lochs.

Can anyone recommmend a particular loch or stream in the area, and is it possible to fish any of these without waders?

Cheers
Yos

Head over to Clifden and fish the river that runs through there, it has trout , sea trout and salmon you will not be short of fishing where ever you stay in that area or contact screebe estates more water round there then you could fish in a lifetime much is free.

Good chance of a salmon from the Owenglen, (River in Clifden) if you have a good flow of water. Its a spate river. I'm from Clifden so know the river fairly well. There are days you are almost guaranteed a fish.. I remember us taking 3, 4 or 5 in a day as a youngster.

In roundstone there are a couple of very interesting bog lakes. Most lakes have very small fish, but there are a couple of lakes where the fish size is decent. One is called Scannive and the other is called Naweelaun (i think). They are out the galway road a few miles from Roundstone...

Very interesting lakes and some good fish. They may average 1lb and always a chance of a better fish... They are about a 1.5 mile treck through the bog. Maybe take a compass

Send me a PM and i'l give you more details.

Cheers
JJ

As JJ said, the Owenglen is a lovely water. Alternatively, just up the road is Lake Beaghcauneen. I've had some lovely browns and seatrout here, nothing hectic size wise but feisty as hell! Good chance of a salmon as well. This is a Clifden Anglers water and they occassionaly have a boat available but there is sufficent access for bank fishing. Give Stanleys a call and they'll give you all the info you need. Phone number at bottom of link.

The small river running through leenane holds nice little brownies as well, and easily fished/climbed without waders. It's visible/accessible from the road going into leenane from maam.

JJ is spot on there with the recommendations.

If you look at google maps around Roundstone you'll see the 2 loughs shown on there. They are deceptive when you're walking around them, it'll take longer than you think and a map and compass is essential if you don't know the area.

Make sure you get the right loughs as some of the loughs up here don't hold any fish or the fish don't get any bigger than your little finger.

Have fun!
