Have a look here for S. Uist A.C. permits.

If you can find a copy of John Kennedy's '70 Lochs - A Guide to Trout Fishing in South Uist' buy it! It'll give you more options than you'll have time. He often mentions which lochs fish best in a given wind and it's good advice to follow.

I'd recommend you take an o.s. map - if only to identify exactly which loch you're standing by. There are so many to try it's hard to recommend any in particular. Try and get a session or two on the machair lochs if your budget runs to it. If not, then try either of the Olabhats, Caslub by boat, Dun Murchaidh for 'dour but big' or just walk out with the rod and fish as you go.

There's a good walk to the Ba Alasdair sea pool via 'Bluebell Loch' (Sanderson) and numerous other lochs if your legs are up to it, too. Who knows what you might catch .....?

Even better, see if you can find John Kennedy in person! Or his son Ian.

Generally...
The lochs seems more affected by the weather than anywhere else I have fished. The fishing can be dire!
You won't see much hatching.
The fish want big flies even in a fairly small ripple, sizes 8 and 10 being my go to sizes.
No water is too shallow to hold fish.
The dour lochs can be very dour indeed. If you are only there for a week do you want to spend a whole day flogging away for the chance of a good fish? Dun Murchaidh is the least scenic loch between Barra and the Butt of Lewis!
Take the advice of the guide books with a pinch of salt, I have had good weeks without ever fishing any of the recommended lochs. Some of the unregarded little puddles can give you fish of 2lb or more.
The further you are from the road the better the fishing

If you intend walking about in the wilds take some foam rubber pipe lagging to help you cross the many barbed wire fences unscathed.

Enjoy

Andy
