Default River Moy - Ireland - beat permit? Ghillie?

Hi Everyone,

First post as someboy from speypages suggested I post here.

I'm going back to Sligo, Ireland this coming July for 2 weeks. It's short 30 minute drive to Ballina and the Rivery Moy. This time I'm bringing my spey rod (or single hand rod).

I've found a few sites advertising ghillie services and fly tackle. However, just about all the sites are non-functional now (recession related?).

I'm about to email a bunch of ghillie's but I was just hoping to build my knowledge before I talk with them.

Questions I'd love to know...

1) How do I go about acquiring a beat permit for the Ridge Pool?
2) Is it suggested I use a ghillie on the River Moy (in Ballina or elsewhere)
3) What is the going rate for a ghillie and beat permit on the Ridge Pool or other prime waters?
4) What should my expecations be for size and numbers? (July 21--31)
5) Other suggested places to fish in County Sligo or Mayo?

Update: I can't seem to get a hold of the Ballina Angling Centre. Has it gone under?

Update 2: I've emailed Paddy McDonnell, so far without any luck in contacting him.

Many thanks in advance,
Preston

I drove over the Moy yesterday no one fishing!, got my licence from Gary last week but I was fishing elsewhere. For angling equipment, bait, etc and friendly advice and lots of information on all aspects of fishing in this area I would thoroughly recommend the Ridge pool Tackle Shop, Ballina [at the upper bridge and beside the cathedral beat] Proprietor: Gary Piggot Tel: 00353 96 72656

Here is the contact details from last year.

info@moyfishery.com

E-MAIL Address of moy fishery at ballina.

they will e-mail you tarriffs and application forms, was 100 euros per sesion on ridge, and 5o euros on cathedral last year, but you may find is fully booked.

Is several tackle shops on riverside (east bank) are open sundays, as is the fishery, for salmon, take their advice on fly patterns and sizes, but apart from that you wont need ghillie for cathedral or ridge pool, is a full time ghillie on both, who will keep you right!
if ridge aint available google foxford fishery, is only 20 mins away from ballina, and produces the goods
regards
bert

Thanks everyone.

I've secured a permit for Cathedral Beat on July 27th.

It was 80 Euros. Did it actually go up 30Euro in one year?! Apparently the Ridge permit is 120 Euros.

Okay. Now that I have a spot what line should I fish on my spey rod? Apparently Cathedral is shallower? Full floater or a Type II or intermediate sinktip?

Also, any suggested patterns to tie up?

I also got a hold of Paddy McDonnell. He might have one day available. We'll see. Fingers crossed.

Does the Easkey have good spey water?

Thanks again. Preston

Hi Preston . I fished the Moy in May in fact my old friend who was with me caught the first and second fish on the Cathedral beat(worm) I had a couple on the ridge with the fly as did my other mate who also had four up river on east mayo water.
The questions you ask about what line to use would be best answered on the day as water conditions will dictate what you use.
The easkey has good fly water but it is heavily dependent on Rain(Spate River)
You will enjoy it thats for sure. I have been going in May for the last 12 years and keep going back allthough I tend to fish up river now, only reason we fished the ridge this year was because the guy who was with us had never fished it. Have Fun
