Re: recommended lake district patterns & known free fly fishing locations please!
for all the lakes traditional patterns work very well.
Haweswater is a favourite of mine, dries on the surface ( black sedge, midge, gnats etc) work very well.
try a black pennel and some zulus while your there. park at the bottom end( other end to the dam) and ignore the first bay unless you see any rising. walk round to the next bay, takes about 10-15mins. thats the bay that seems to hold a larger number of fish.
ullswater, again top end near glenridding and portinscale. form the bank is great sport as the fish are close in, again usual patterns.
while at ullswater you may as well go to brothers water, 10 mins drive. holds perch, trout and char i think. never caught a char form there. limits on where you can fish. western shore only i think but double check.
also, angle tarn is definitely worth a go. bit of a hike but beautiful fish up there.
hope this helps
