Default Has anyone DIY fished Isla Holbox in Mexico?

myself and my buddy Portcullis are looking to find a DIY location in the tropics for a week for next spring. (Cayo Coco, Cuba was first on the list as I've been there before, but it seems there may no longer be the option of 7 days there, only 14). So ...I'm looking for other options. The fishing is the main criteria (wading)....I'll sleep in a beach hut if needs be!

Searching for possible DIY swffing destinations lead me to scrolling around on Google Earth looking at good spots/regions in Mexico from Ascension Bay, north to some way past Cancun, and then trying to find places to stay that were close to areas I could wander on foot with a rod. I came across Holbox. I've heard it mentioned many times but hadn't realised where it was. Closer inspection by zooming in revealed it to be a classic bonefish/permit haunt, but there's a fair bit of coastline round the island....and a choice of small hotels and rental modest apartments too. So, it has the hall-mark of a potential DIY shore swffing destination for a loosely planned/intended trip next year. But is it? Has anyone been there - can anyone tell me any more about it? Any pointers would be appreciated -

Hi Polite,

Not really viable as DIY. There are very few bonefish. You will find the odd jack walking the beaches but not too much else.

Also heavily netted which doesn't help. It is a tarpon destination only which requires use of the local guides/boats.

I suggest you look further south.

Hope this helps
Mat

Mat is absolutely right.Very good for big tarpon at the right time but you need pangas.

Look at Punta Allen or Crooked Island.Tobago is also a good DIY location.

Good hunting JP
