Default Poland - Kayaking on the Czarna Hancza

Hi All,

I will be travelling to Poland in July to kayak along the Czarna Hancza for two weeks. Very much looking forward to it!

As it is a mate who is running the trip I've been told there is lots of scope to get a bit of fishing in.

I wonder if anyone has any experience of this river, and what species will be available to go after.

I will be very limited to tackle so will only be able to take one rod, and am wondering what this should be (fly, spinning rod?).

Any advice on this or fishing in Poland in general, much appreciated.

Thanks,

Rich

No-one at all?

I've opted for a travel spinning rod as I have been told there is an abundance of pike, trout and perch to go after, which much of our kayaking being on large lakes.

I will report back after the trip.

Know nothing about the river, but what about taking a combi rod?
are dozens on market which convert from spinning to fly fishing by changeing butt around.
they are all multi section, ideal for packing away, and indeed aint that expensive, so if you "eskimo" and lose kit, aint a big loss!

Hi bert,

I thought about that. The main concern is space. We're limited to a single back-pack (i've managed to haggle an 85 litre back-pack over the stipulated 60). But I still reckon I'll struggle getting it all in. I've got a spinning rod, a reel, and a small box of lures, which should be ok.

If I had to take a fly reel, leader material, flies etc it might not be doable.

I'm going to to a test-pack this week and if it does work out I might just go for it.

My other concern is (and it might be unfounded) that these combi-rods are a bit pants. Are there decent ones out there?

Thanks mate,

Rich

Hi Rich

I have not fished the river in question but i have done a fair amount of fishing in some of the rivers in the south east. If i were you i would take along a 5/6 or 6/7 fly rod and then a small ish coffee grinder with about 7 or 8 pound line on. This way you can chop and change whenever you like, and dont let anyone tell you that a 6/7 is too small for pike, i'v done it countless times. And i love spinning with a fly rod, especially for perch.

A lot of the rivers in poland have a real mixed bag of fish. You can often find trout, grayling, perch, and pike in all of the same areas, however, the poles tend to keep everything they catch no matter how small, and what i have found is that when fishing with the worm all of the above tend to be caught....except grayling..!! You get a lot of spinning with small rapalas for trout and plenty of guys fishing the worm, but not that many fishing with maggots, so the grayling tend to be around in numbers.

I have often been told that there are ''no fish in this river'' but in the evening i can make out small rises, and it turned out they were grayling (liep-yeng) thats not the actual spelling but how you say it in english. Some of the rivers are big and fast flowing, and i've done some kayaking myself in poland. I can imaging it though being quite difficult flyfishing off a moving kayak...

With Rich on that logic.
Take a short (8' to 9') multi section #6/7 fly rod with reel to match, and spinning reel loaded with 10 lbs nylon.(if piking a wire trace on end!)
Will work same as combi style rod previously mentioned.
will land big fish!
As to the pants comment, all combi rods are an attempt to do both!
therefore they wont fly cast like a loomis, but they will spin cast as good as your ability!
If you are a "fly man", take the multi piece fly rod as suggested, cos you will be able to spin cast as normal!
regards
bert
