Default Canada Fishing Recommendations

Hi

Darling wife & I are driving from Vancouver to Calgary in an RV over 2 weeks in late Sept. Given that we're probably going to drive each other mad, we've decided to have a few seperate day activities - me fishing, her horse riding.

So any fly fishing recommendations for over there? I'd need to hire most kit etc...

Thanks!

I have fished BC and was not there during salmon prime time, but I think September is better.

The sturgeon fishing is amazing, so long as you are not a "fly only" sort of chap - a 1lb bar of lead with a sardine nailed to the bottom is more the thing, but hooking something over 100lbs in fresh water and seeing it jump is a bit special !!!

Numerous lakes around the hub city of Kamloops, BC area. Approximately 400, in a 70 mile radius of the city. Google the area. You will see that it's on your way to Calgary. I like Knouff Lake. Check it out!

Hi hblsc,
Just noticed your post, you will have the chance to fish rivers, lakes and small streams on your travels from Vancouver to Cowtown, done this trip each way quite a few times, plenty good fishing off Highway 1.
Please let me know what you want to fish for, and i will try and help out.
I have been working like a dog, then heading off to fish that route for a few months at a time for many years, and will possible pass you on the road as i will be there Sept for trip number 37.
Failing that i know Peter Collingsworth at Angling Direct Holidays will do his best to get you some great fishing.
Thanks Gordon.

Has some guided days with Darren Wright who used to work out of here;

Monod Sports: Fly Fishing

Had a great day for cut throats on the River Highwater near Calgary, and of course, don't forget the Bow river.

Oh dear! I Goggled Knouff Lake after posting my suggestion and I see there was a double homicide near the lake, couple of years ago. Don't be alarmed. This doesn't happen all that often. Bring your bear spray and a bulletproof jacket just to play safe.

I found a decent web site which has plenty of information for your journey through BC. I hope you will write about your experiences after you return home safely. Have fun!

Stop off at the town of Hope, about 100 miles from Vancouver. Call in at Cheyenne Sports & he'll tip you off as to whether the pinks are running. If there is a decent run he'll tell you exactly where to go for them. Easy access just on the edge of town. Buy the flies from Cheyenne. Pink flies for pink salmon. Last time I was there in 2009 I had a dozen in an hour.

If you are feeling a bit more adventurous there is the Skagit River which enters the Fraser just outside Hope. You'll need to drive about 50km up the valley for the best fishing along gravel logging tracks. Worth it for some lovely rainbows.

Take your own gear - much easier than trying to hire.

Licences are not cheap. £80 for the basic licence as an "alien" visitor. If you start fishing Classified rivers, or for steelhead or sturgeon the price ratchets up rapidly. My last trip cost me £215 in licences!

You'll be going through Kamloops. As well as the hundreds of lakes, have a look at the Clearwater River. This is about 2 hours north of Kamloops on Highway 5. Stop off en route at Little Fort where there is a super tackle store where you can get all the latest info. In Clearwater town turn off to the left and follow the Clearwater Valley road until you find the river. Bailey's Chute is worth a visit if the Chinook Salmon are trying to leap the falls. Lots of rainbows in the Clearwater as well as a few Bull Trout, one of which I had the misfortune to lose last time I was there.

Pick up the BC Fishing Regulations book at the earliest opportunity.

Good info from BobP. While you are in Hope, BC (BTW, this is where the first RAMBO movie was filmed), check out Home Restaurant, especially for their breakfast menu.

This site will give you the rules and regs for BC.
