Default Kola on the cheap?

What's the absolute cheapest price you can do Kola for? To get there, stay somewhere, fish etc? How much are you gonna be talking per day, week etc? Is this something you'd only consider doing with a pal or can you go on your own? The only problem I'd have with the latter is protection from wildlife... I am thinking bears and wolves? Would I need a firearm and how likely would I be able to get one in Russia as a foreigner?

Would you just get flights to Murmansk then helicopter or car to location? Alternatives? Can you head to Sweden/Finland then car hire and drive up there? I hear there's some pretty good fishing in Sweden too for wild brown trout and pretty huge ones as well.

I think I'd worry less about the bears and wolves and more about the summer mosquitoes...

I don't know about firearm permits for personal protection - my guide only ever carried a sheath knife - have you given thought on how to be invited to apply for a visa to enter Russia at Murmansk in the first place?

Will showing up with a bottle of vodka in my luggage do the trick?

'Coals to Newcastle' springs to mind... Pic is of a Ponoi picnic.

There's a considerable difference in prices between trout and salmon fishing on the Kola and secondly between rivers and dates (ranging from +/- £ 10.000 a week (all in)to +/- £ 2100 for 9 days fishing(flights and visa not included)). It all depends on the level of service, accommodation and guidance you're looking for and the size and number of fish you would like to catch (if all goes well).

For my first Kola trip I've opted for the cheaper two river solution. I'll see where it goes from there...
PM me if you're interested in the details.

Regards,

Ever hear of bear spray?

You haven't a hope in getting a firearm unless you are prepared to buy one on the black market.

Any decent hotel can arrange the invitation letter for you. Then you'll need to get the tourist visa from the embassy here.

I would recommend to try Chavanga river, have a look at the web site to find suitable information for you, its a pretty affordable price. Its all inclusive except flights to Murmansk 2200 euros 7 days of fishing. Iam not sure if there is still a space for this summer, try to contact them by mail. Very interesting river, with lots of fresh fish income. Regards Chavanga - Fly Fishing
