Default Boa Vista Cape Verde Islands.

Thinking of going to boa vista, cape verde late august/september.
I know this aint peak time for marlin, and was wondering if anyone had experience of beach fly fishing for other species?
Any knowledge/advice would be welcome, as am still toying with going back to Cuba, cayo coco again!
cape verde is on list cos i can get there direct from local airport, and flying time is less than cuba.
regards

Thumbs down

Went there last april.Yes there is fish to be caught off the beach fly fishing which I did,but the currents and waves can be dangerous at times even when your on the sand and the wind is a constant strong blow. The wash up the beach is very strong as a few sunbathers were dragged back in while I was there.I,m 6'6" and i found it hard to stay on my feet at times but you need to get to the waters edge to reach the fish.Cassarva, blue fish ,trevally, grouper odd large bone when its calm and small shark are the main ones you will see.So be careful.

But most of all, there is quiet a lot of Muggings there in the day ,and you dont have to be far away for this to happen.
I had £1800 of stuff nicked 5 yrds away from me and the wife, there was no one else around Except for some scum which had been waiting and watching in the bushes while we where on the beach,as they told us later they work in teams. They will put a knife or machette to you and can be violent as the week after we had left a family were attacked, the 12yr old daughter was held at knife point while they took everything. The week while we were there a women was held at knife point and had here camera and belongs what she was carriyng and wearing on the beach taken 30yrds away from everyone else. They don't tell you this but when we reported it they weren't bother as it is a very common occurance.
I would assume you'll be staying at the rui.If you are its like a cattle market, stuff does get knicked from your rooms by staff and theres been some seriously bad bugs there, resulting in people returning not being let of the plane in this country.
If it were me I would not bother because the travel agents paint a very false picture and its not safe to wander , the police there dont give a toss and the majority of the muggers live in the dunes all around and they are allways watching you as you catch a glimsp of them from time to time.
Hope that helps...

read same post on world sea angling site, flicker.
did make me think a bit.
assume it was you, with different sign in name, rather than just copying post.
however her indoors is a bit reluctant to go through the 18 hour return trip from cuba, and is open to suggestions for laid back hotel holiday (no sight seeing but allowing me to fish) and i know that there are collosal bones(unrecognised world record of 22 lbs!) on the islands, albeit few and far between, i stilll might take the plunge.
like you i am rather tall, and am used to fishing in big swells/undertows, and am well experienced in protecting my property, but story about the kids with guns did make me think!!
hopefully wont happen if i book, but web reports do suggest situation hasnt improved.
regards
bert

Yes it was me under a different sign in.Theres not much to the Island vast majority is sand dunes.Me and the wife were up by the lagoon on the beach only 100yrds away from the last people on the beach and it was the reps recommendation to go there as you can get out of the wind abit.Ive got eyes in the back of my head when it comes to watching my stuff and the wife was sunbathing next to it covered up,but the thought of being watched really scared her as they could of quiet easliy come out and attacked her if I was a bit further away. Two couples a few weeks later hired a dune buggy to go and see a ship wreck, which is recommended again by the reps. While there 4 masked men came out with machettes and they where robbed blind.Next day they got some freinds to book the same to see if anything was mentioned, not a jot. They know its a big prblem there but just want your money.Theres only 6 police on the island and there mainly at the airport.
Yes there are some huge bones as I saw one around 15lb plus this is when I was going to change my fly and found my stuff gone. Our backs were turned only for few seconds but thats all it took.
You might be fine but as you are probably going to be away from the crowds is it worth risking it?
Probabley better of going to Fueturventura but more down south as theres some cracking water down there with some belting sand bars ect and its not to busy.

Default CaboVerde

Is this now rife throughout the islands? I have been to St Vicente a couple of times fishing out of Mindelo Marina and no problems of this nature. Not apparent anyway.Had a couple of friends go out not so long back purely on holiday and no adverse reports of this nature.Reads like it is a nightmare.

I have travelled to various places which can reputedy be unpredictable but take care not to push the envelope and get isolated. So far so good.

Best JP

As far as I know and red its mainly on boa vista as I havent seen any bad reports about the other islands.Theres been plenty of bad reports on trip advisor about this and how dangerous the sea is as well. Some very good swimmers have been dragged over the coral reefs and cut to shreads, must of seen at least half a doz people while we were there. One lady further down went swimming and she was about 10yrds out it took here over 200yrds down the coast before she could manage to swim back to shore and she was a good swimmer.
Ive been to some poor places and felt safe but I personally wouldn't go back as you'll be spending more time watching your back than enjoying the fishing which defeats the holiday.

Fished with a guy last year (stillwater fresh) who had a spell on those Islands and he took a travel rod and had a ball.

His wife got a little upset as he was away from the sun bed too much but he loved it!
