Default mexico in June

Hello, I have booked an 11 night trip in the riviera maya in june this year. Its primarily just a summer holiday but I have made it clear to the missus one day will involve me disappearing to go fishing, now wether this is for marlin, tarpon, bones I really don't mind. I just need an idea of companies to get in touch with, or if anyone has been before what advice / tips can they give?

I've exchanged a few emails with a company called Captain Ricks, which is mainly for marlin but I would like to see what else I have available to me.

Any help much appreciated

chris

Default Mexico Trip

Hello Chris

Try pescamaya they are a very good outfit who might be able to help you.I am just not sure exactly where you are staying.

I can only advise you the blue marlin fishing odds are not great for a single day charter and even then it is often hours of nothing followed by a burst of mayhem if you are very lucky.Sailfish are more likely with the occasional white marlin plus dorado and wahoo. For a one day shot you might be better to consider something different unless you are very single minded and happy to take the chance a marlin might come along. You will find Capt.Ricks to be good but be prepared for the crew to run the show if you have not fished this way before and you will not actually do much fishing if they are trolling unless you have a strike. If they fish by casting baits(ballyhoo) to pods of fish then it is a whole different ball game and a lot of fun but honestly normal/more budget orientated day charters just troll unless you advise them how you wish to fish.It is the way of day charters in Mexico.Nothing wrong with it as they are more often dealing with novice gamefishers.I hope your dates coincide with dark side of the moon. Now the bonefishing is fantastic and you would be unlikely not to have a few shots with Pescamaya and you will be the man on the rod.
Whatever it is a fabulous experience.Hope you are a good sailor as Carribean offshore bluewater can be a tad lumpy in spite of what you see in the pictures.Take care with solar protection as Mexico is really hot in June and I mean really hot enough to ruin your holiday if you are caught out.Straw type sombreros are cheap in the local markets and worth every penny.Good luck and have a good one.Would think charters would be relatively easy to pick up in June because it is too hot for majority of holiday folks but it is a good time to fish for pelagics.

Best JP

Hello JP, that was a really helpful post, thanks for that. We are staying in puerto aventuras, at the el dorado seaside suites and captain rick tells me their office is literally 5 mins from the hotel, but from what you have just said Im not too sure, I'd like to be quite active whilst Im fishing, plus paying between 300-400 for one day not to catch anything I would be beyond gutted.

How much would a typical day bone fishing set me back? Another thing to mention is I wouldnt be looking to take any gear with me.

I'll google pescamaya, have you used them personally?

thanks again

I went with Aquaworld in Cancun a couple of years ago and I think they are situated in various parts of Mexico, I had a great day out with three Cuda to myself to 52 lb, very hot in July though

I you're interested in tarpon there's some wonderful fly fishing for giant tarpon (up to 200 lbs!) on the island of Holbox, about 3 hours north west of Cancun. Google Holbox and you'll find the island's website, where you can find details of fishing. The guy who handles most of the fishing there is known as Mr Sandflea!

Bones and Tarpon will be a good option. Permit are a possibility but probably a bit of a ball ache if you've only got a day or two to spend after them.

Default Mexico In June

Hello Chris

Your luck is in as a kindred spirit Tom Martin who lives on the Yucatan has just joined the forum and is open to questions. You will find him in member Introductions under Pescamexicana.

Yes I have fished with Pesca Maya from their lodge in Ascension Bay but not offshore with them.I have fished in Mexico although mostly Pacific side many times over the years.I have fished Offshore a couple of times out of Akumal which is quite close to puerto adventura. It is very good there as the fishing grounds are very close and lots of sailfish at the right time of the year.It is a real good area for offshore and flats. It is a little difficult to advise for you going in first time but you should be fine with Captain Rick who will also have access to pangas which if the conditions are good are a very good option for a single angler on a budget.I could almost guarantee you could go without booking and find a panga charter yourself but you really need to be familiar with the territory. In Akumal I fished from pangas owned by Carlos who also owned the Cueva Pescador Restaurant on the beach.Akumal was a brilliant place totally unspoilt as has a Turtle beach there.

I would check in with Tom Martin as he lives right there, fishes and could possibly open some doors for you.Good luck.

Best JP
