Hi, Dave,
I used to live on Lewis and know the area around Scaliscro pretty well.
You don't say if you are staying on the estate or just nearby.
Is it just brownies you are after, or will you be looking for silver fish, too?
To be honest, I wouldn't pay to fish Scaliscro. They haven't got a decent home salmon system, although they do have access to Loch Langavat (the headwaters of the Grimersta system). This is a good hour + walk away over rough ground, holds salmon, ST, brownies and char and is as wild and wonderful place as you'll find. Bank fishing is good, but I'd prefer to be drifting in a boat for the salmon.
They also have L. Tungavat, about 15 mins walk from the road. A few years back this produced a fair few 4 lb+ trout, fed up from pellets below the smolt cages, but if they're no longer farming there then the big fish will have gone.
Another is L. Corrigerod, about a 20/30 minute walk. It's a great loch for kids as it's got a large head of 5 oz to 10 oz fish. A lovely place on a sunny Hebridean day.
There were also rumours of occasional good bags coming from a loch in the hills to the west of the lodge, but I've never fished it. Ask when you're there.
Next door to Scaliscro is Morgail Estate, perhaps the most beautiful on the island. The salmon fishing will probably be taken, but there's good trouting for kids to be had on L. Ruiridh, about 20 mins walk west from the byre. Plenty of eager brownies between 6 oz and 3/4 lb. A 1 1/4 lber would be a monster!
I've had great days on L. Lomhain (about 40 mins from the lodge towards Morsgail Bay on L. Langavat) catching hard fighting browns to 1 lb 1/4, ave 3/4 lb. Give
Malcolm McPhail a ring when you're there to ask permission.
As st7 says, not everywhere is free, particularly waters with running fish, but plenty are, and these days even on the commercial estates, just for the courtesy of asking first.
If you're not restricted to the Uig area then there are just too many wonderful places to list!
If you want some salmon fishing, day tickets are available on several rivers and lochs. The Creed system near Stornoway has produced well in recent years and L. Barvas is worth a try. If you get a spate both the Gress and Carloway rivers are cheap options where you'll have a chance of a fish.
I recommend that you email Donnie MacIver at the
Outer Hebrides Fisheries Trust. He's the Angling Promotion Officer and there's none I know on the island with a better knowledge than he. If you let him know where you'll be staying and when, and what kind of fishing you want (not just species, but 'wilderness', boat, numbers v size, etc) I'm certain he'll see you right.
You could also seek out a copy of Norman McCleod's 'Trout Fishing in Lewis' (try Sportsworld, Francis St., Stornoway). It's a little dated now, but gives O.S. grid references along with what to expect, size-wise, recommended flies and illustrations of 'hotspots'. It's extremely useful if you're driving around the island and fancy a quick cast as it covers the whole of Lewis.
Don't forget to buy some midge repellent, there may be horse fly around in early July, too. Jungle Formula does it for me, but some like Avon Skin So Soft. If the wind drops to nothing head for a loch near the sea as you may pick up a breeze there. Pack for all seasons - you never know what the week will bring. Sun blocker is essential - if it ever breaks through!
If you'd like to pm me with your intended location I may be able to suggest more options.
Hope you have a fantastic time!
