Wink South Uist

Hi,all going for a weeks fishing to South Uist 2nd week in june. was looking for any info regarding the various lochs. I know there are many, but are some more successful than others or is it better to just try your luck?. regards

You'll be spoilt for choice. All of the machair lochs have superb trout in them, and generally will produce them - though not always! My own favourites are Bornish anf Stilligary (I can never spell that the gaelic way!), but, if you can get on to Mid Ollay, you may have a pleasant surprise. You may also feel a "presence" there, as there is a broch in the middle, where someone may have fished thousands of years ago. West Ollay can produce big trout, and shouldn't be too weedy at the time you're going. I rather like East Bee, which is brackish (and big) so always a chance of a sea trout. Then there is a whole host of hill lochs, and a lot of lochs near the road side; some look fishy - and aren't, whilst of others the reverse is true. If you need a ghillie, you could do far worse than Ian Kennedy, but there are others.

You need to get hold of "Tales from the Anglers Retreat".

The Anglers Retreat -

The book is a series of short stories by anglers who have fished on South Uist. I've never been there myself, but after reading the book, it is high on my list of places I want to fish.

I go to South Uist regular, best to look here it's all the info you need.;
Angling Club Loch Permits :: South Uist Fishing
Lower Kildonan and Bornish have been best for me, Machair Lochs are more expensive but the fish tend to be bigger in my own experience.

cheers Diarmid.

I used to read of big bags taken on this brilliant loch in the 1920s, grilse and sea trout, I've never visited, so hadn't realized it was (now) disected by a causeway (see image). Still very high on my 'to do' list on a windy day.

there are too many lochs on Uist's to discuss on one forum, what i wish i knew on arrival was that the estate office for north uist is on the right just past the hotel coming off the ferry..permit central for the north,
association permits for the north at the shop next to the road junction heading south,
and permits for the south at the hotel, right at the other end of south uist,

dont be frieked by hard staring short eared owls, drive carefully at night unless you like otter shaped bumpers and drink heavily saturday night and have a lie in sunday

Beware! there isn't just the one ferry to consider; you can arrive at Loch Boisdale or Loch Maddy, depending on choice!
