Default Brown trout in Iceland

Hello.
I am a Spanish fly fisher, and this is my first time in this foro.
I like the fish of brown trout, and me an my friend we want to make a trip to Iceland to fish brown trout, artic char, sea trout, and may be a salmon, but our principal fish is brown trout.
Two years ago we fished in Austria, and past year in Slovenia, and the experience was
wonderfull, but we want another thing, we want nature brown trout, sea trout, we want the best trip of trout possible.
I have not been never in Iceland, and certainly I do not know what rivers are the most advisable to be able to have successful.
I have read that in the north there are many rivers and lakes, and the best river is Laxa en Adaldal, or Litla, Reykjadalsa, Svarta but I do no know if someone has been going fishing in these rivers or for this zone and know if the rivers are nice, if there are many trouts, if they can be fished by dry fly.
Definitively, someone who could count his experience in the fishing trout in Iceland, since the trip costs a lot of money and I would like to know all the possible details.
For us, it is not important to us so much the size, though yes we would like to be able to fish trouts from 2 to 3 kilos, but also to be able to fish several trouts, 10 to 15 trouts from 35 to 40cm.
We do not know if , every day is possible to fish from 15 to 20 trouts (among) 35 to 40 cm with some surprise of some bigger trout.
We prefer fishing the fish in positions(attitudes) of currents before that in the big wells.
Many graces for your attention.
Sorry for my english.

Hi BRoc,

I fish for salmon in Iceland fairly regularly, and have also fished for char and trout there. Firstly, the salmon rivers are fiercely expensive, and you'd be best off fishing for salmon in them! There is a lot of trout fishing in Iceland at much better prices with most fish up to 2kg, but a fair few that can reach 5kg or more. Most of the trout fishing i've done has been with sunk flies in Iceland, but they do come up for dries. one thing, the trout in Iceland are among the most stunningly marked i have ever seen. The rivers have plenty in them, though i'm not sure you'll see 20 a day. the rivers are stunning, gin clear and fast flowing. you'll have a blast - good luck,

Hi
Thank you very much for your response.
In what rivers had you fished for brown trout?
We think that June or July are good dates for fly fishing with dry fly.
And the fishing in the lakes?
Are there a lot of “mosquitos”?
Sorry for my questions, but if is possible we want to make this trip and we want
all the information, and we think that the information from fishers to fisher is the best
information that we have.
We have been in Austria and Slovenia, and we can give information about our experience, types of rivers, where are natural fish, best rivers, and we think that this are the best information.
Thank you
Broc

Hi I have fished on the Vatnsdalsa for Brownies, and ont he 2 neigbbouring rivers up there I have also fished stilwater 'Floodid' which was absolutely packed with browns and char (over 100 per day up to 1kg). on the Floodid, it's shallow and warm so the flies were hatching and being taken, on the rivers the water's cold, deep and fast in the pools, meaning that rising trout were not common.

There are a few midges to contend with, but i find a hearty marlboro sends them packing, or a slug of malt whisky!!

Have a look at this hotel.
Fishing in Freshwater

Is based right on ranga river, famous for big brown trout and char, with occasional salmon.
Day trip packages available as long as you stay in hotel.

Iceland can be good value for brown trout and sea run char. Buy the 'Fishing card' at local fuel stations for about £35 and you can fish a variety of waters all around the Island. I had some good fishing on the card in various lakes.

In the north east, Lake Myvatn is a wonderful place to fish, about £8 and I had browns up to 2lb.

On the north, near Akureyri, I fished the Eyjafjardara River for sea run char - about £30 for a half day. Fantastic fishing and scenery, I caught 4 fresh run fish to about 5lbs, amazing experience.......
